Title: Lime
Post by: gibbygib on January 09, 2007, 13:30:22
Hi There
I think that I am going to have to add some lime this year as I have had the allotment for 4 years and never done it. I also don't know when the previous chap last did it.
I have a test meter although as it's been so wet I haven't had a chance to test it yet.
My question is where do I get the lime as I haven't seen it in my local garden centre and what's the brand name called?  Also how much per m2 to lower the Ph by 1.

Thanks
Gibbygib

This info might help;

As far as purchasing it is concerned I am not sure as I get mine through the allotment association.

I prefer hydrated lime to crushed limstone I find it deters slugs & snails as pointed out in another thread recently.

Perhaps you can use a buliders merchant or B&Q if you have one in your area.

I hope this helps.

Does your site run a shop? Best bet...

Thanks for the link, unfortunately our allotment does not have a shop but I have an idea of what to look for now.
Just realised my mistake, I meant raise the Ph not lower it.

I just lime the holes where I'm planting, just a sprinkle a bit in the hole mix around with the soil and pop the plant in. (Brassicas I hope).

I usually sprinkle the whole designated area with a light layer of lime and allow it to dilute into the ground naturally. A minimum of 2 weeks prior to planting required, but I lime the autumn before. I know some lime now.
