Title: How big will it be when dismantled?
Post by: LauraB on January 09, 2007, 09:45:31
I have been offered a second hand, 8' by 6' greenhouse. It's the bog standard sort. How big might it be when fully dismantled?

My husband will collect it for me but is sceptical about it's size. He obviously hasn't forgotton the times where I would buy a wardrobe/double bed in ikea and expect him to get it home in our Fiesta  8)

We have a Mondeo now, so the question is, can we use the car with the seats folded down to collect, or will I need to hire a van?

It will reduce down to a fairly compact size, but the limiting dimensions will be the 8ft rails. I believe these will transport if you rest them across the back of the front passenger seat, and perhaps use the rear split seat to accomodate two persons. It is worth remembering, when transporting glass, to store it on its side, rather than flat, as otherwise the lower panes can crack from the weight of those above.

So it should all just break down into rails, and panes of glass?

I've had 8ft timber in the car before, so should be ok...

Yes, plus numerous fasteners etc. A suggestion is to take photographs of all the joints, so you can reassemble without too many problems (greenhouses give many headaches !!!). Also, if you have the time, I would write a number on all members at every joint, using an indelible pen, then you are guaranteed to get it back in the original order ...  :)

Not quite but they are shut on Sunday and as I work in an other town they are shut when I set off 7:00 am and I usually don't get back until @ 5:00pm.....
Gone are the three day hangover years... by about two decades!

I dismantled glass from one and transported all the glass in my car. Me & brother in law carried the built up frame 1 & 1/4 miles road all the way to our lottie. Took 40 minutes. Would of took longer to dismantle! With the help of 2 other allotmenteers we lifted the frame over the fence and into the lottie.

That's exactly what I intend to do to mine which is only moving three plots!
Rope the lads and the misses in and I reckon it will take about 15mins to move... if it will fit between the other g'house and the shed!

Absolutely. Loads of people were laughing their little socks off. A bus driver stopped as we got to a T junction so we cold cross a road. He was hysterical....
