spent a blissful day on my plot yesterday, spoiled only by the realisation that some b*gger has nicked my string >:( I know it's really nothing to whinge about, especially in light of recent vandalism problems, but it's the principle! plus it means that someone climbed over the gate or fence and had a good old wander around my plot, which I don't like so much. I spent ages measuring up and marking out beds with canes and string and when I'd finished it made me feel much more in control. next time I'll go for the girly pink plastic stuff rather than the hairy biodegradable stuff!!
It's a sad moment when you see the first snake in Paradise, sorry to hear it norfolklass

did they nick the hairy string you'd put down or the big spare ball? my lottie neighbours avoided our plot in the first year cos they all tripped over so much string, shame your visitor didn't do the same :-\
Sorry to hear about this Norfolklass. I was really annoyed when my lightweight azada disspeared , though to be honest I probably left it lying on my plot instead of locking it away in the toolbox. But guess what... 4 months after the azada disappeared it suddenly turned up again (a bit rustier). The council had just mowed the communal areas including a tall nettle jungle close to my plot. I guess some kids had taken the tool, then decided it wasn't any use to them and had thrown it into the nettles where it lay undiscovered till the council mowed the grass.
whoever took it cut all 200 feet off the bamboo canes quite neatly (with a knife by the looks of it) and left all the canes behind. as nothing else was taken or interfered with I can only assume it was another plot holder who needed some string... which somehow makes it worse as everyone has been so friendly. it's also made me very paranoid about putting down the weed suppressing fabric I'd bought. and to top it all off, I broke my fork :(
but, looking on the bright side, as they left the canes at least I don't have to measure up again ::)

I don't really understand. Surely it takes more effort to sneak about cutting string down than to pop to the shop and spend all of a pound or two on your own?
Sorry to hear about your opportunist thief - they might just bring it back !!!!
It is a shame though when somthing like that happens
Sounds to me like this could be someone who disliked you laying out beds in a certain way or whatever. Or maybe they tripped over it or something - if so - serves them right - they shouldn't have been on your plot!
Sounds like sour grapes to me!!! I reckon the pink string could do the trick! I have a bright pink trub type bucket for weeding and carrying stuff etc - I reckon no one would nick that and if they did I would be able to spot it!!

First fork of the season down already Norfolk lass... I'll have to get some digging done to catch up with you!
;D
I thought someone was stealing my string (rough green cheap stuff) or at least cutting it, until I noticed that it always snaps when subjected to rain and sun. Most of it was hiding in the undergrowth, so I cheered up a bit when I found it.
This is a completely open unprotected site with a tiny torn notice saying the name of the site, No Dogs and Allotment Owners Only, but it is used as a dog walking area and as a playground by a horde of young boys with whom I try to remain on friendly terms in case of deliberate damage.
They asked me for string to make bows and arrows with, so I gave them some. Shortly afterwards my bamboo canes disappeared and I was fairly sure I saw them in the distance fighting with them....and later on they had clearly used my picked, drying squashes as footballs, leaving them smashed around the field.
I think they are not exactly "thieves" but get carried away in their play, and I sympathise with them in a way - it's wonderful for children to be able to run yelling round in a large open field. I chose this site on purpose so that my own grandsons can let off steam here, and it has been a godsend already.
After initial depression, I am just more careful about what I leave visible. We had a discussion on another thread about building pretend compost heaps and so on, and I certainly won't leave around any Red Rags to Bulls such as desirable fighting sticks and kickable squashes. The dogs I am dealing with by netting beds so that they are discouraged from leaping on them without having over-defensive (and expensive) fences.
Apparently several wooden gates and shed doors were removed and burned on our site a couple of weeks ago- didn't know anything about it & they didn't touch ours, don't know why. If the council would get the hedges cut they might have been spotted. >:(
I had my shed broken into a couple of weeks ago, they took everything, but luckily left a few fingerprints which are being processed. The police might never find who did it unless it is someone with a previous record. The police cannot understand why my shed was targeted, but I think someone saw me take my christmas presents there (new spade, fork, trowel set, boot brush, stove etc.) and thought they needed them more.
never mind, its all material (down right annoying but material). I now have a piercing shed alarm - just in case. >:(

That's a great idea! When we get around to getting a new shed we'll follow your lead, that'll surprise the b*****ds! :o ;D
when we first mved onto our plot we had three cases of "stuff going missing" in the first fortnight..........not soley confined to us.but all the plot holders.
i got myself a shed alarm...........of sorts!
have you seen the poacher scarers?
fires a blank shotgun cartridge when activated by a trip wire?
got meself one of those..............brilliant...............in the close confines of a shed the noise is defening..............well....................acording to the wife.............who didnt know id set the trap, and went up one day while i was at work!!!!!
i could understand the moaning if she`d walked in on version two..........the one with the pepper strapped to the front of the cartridge!
think the bad boys got the message tho..............its never been used in anger..so to speak!
