???...Please can anyone suggest the best time to plant potatos and what sort would they go for?................also when would they then be ready for harvesting?
The beds i am looking to use have had green manure planted for nearly 3 months so what is the best method and time scale for planting of potatos in to these please?
All help would be great!
Happy New Year!
To fill in time, waiting for a reply that can take pages - & has done - have a look at eg Marshalls catalogue. There are many others.
Have a look at the previous threads that have recently discussed potatoes.
Hi Estcourt.... there is a pot thread at the bottom of this page and a couple more on page two.... I'm sure one of our more techie members can put a good link in their answer to take you right there... If Frosts are normal in your area I would leave it until Easter, which is about 10-11 weeks away...
::)
As a very rough guide -
First earlies - planted early March - harvested June/July
Second earlies - planted mid-March - harvested July/August
Maincrops - planted late March - harvested September to October
All harvesting times are dependant on the variety and the weather. In reality I plant all of mine around the middle of March and harvest them when they look ready
I plant slightly later, in the Midlands ...
First Earlies - mid March
Second Earlies - Late March/Early April
Maincrop - Mid April
Many thanks to all for some great tips!
Think I will plant mid-march and keep fingers crossed!

Yes, one that's getting cheekier every day ;D
Apparently some late potatoes ar classed as an Early Main Crop, & a Late Main Crop Suppose it depends on variety as to maturity dates
Early mains reach full tuber size/weight yeild after a set number of weeks Late Mains tend to be day length sensitive and not a great option if you get blight or early frosts (whaterver they are these days!)
::)
Also noted MT nice one, I only planted earlies last year, so I will be doing things properly this year. :) :) ;) ;) :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D
