Title: Main Crop Potatoes
Post by: busy_lizzie on April 24, 2004, 19:02:24
We put our Earlies in at Easter, but we have dug another bit of ground nearby and thought we would do Main Crop potatoes as well now.  The trouble is no-one seems to have any left anywhere.  :( Anyone got any ideas or advice where I can get some from?  Thanking you in antic. ;D ;D busy_lizzie

Shame - round here the centres are stacked with them! They'll probably have to bin them. And I had a tray left over yesterday.

You've tried all the catalogues?  = Tim

And here in Leeds, B&Q were selling off their stock at 10p a bag last week :(

Hope you find some - Gavin

A sudden thought - if you fail, just order 'second croppers' from Marshalls - & put them in in July? = Tim

Thanks Tim and Gavin, still trying various places.  Man at my Site said he had a few second earlies going spare, so will see what he has got.  Thanks for the thought Tim. Can I plant Pots in July?  Do I chit them and do they overwinter? Sorry for the bombardment of questions but didn't realise you could plant pots so late - still need to learn so much.  ;D busy_lizzie

I put Marshall's pots in (as is!) in mid July & harvest mid  Sep. Equally, I've lifted them when they were solid with frost, yet they cooked fine!

I've done the same with Tesco's Cara which were chitting in the larder.

No site,  but 01945 466 711.= Tim

You can get some from Edwin Tucker, mail order.

I have just this minute ordered 30 tubers of a late main crop, Arran Victory for my new allotment to suppliment my home plot.

Sorry I haven't replied to all.  Just working so hard at the moment on garden and allotment.  There doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day.

Have managed to get some "Majestic", which have now been put in.
Thank you very much for all your info Tim.  I am making a note of it for future times.  Also thank you Jerry for your response, have also made a note for any future problems getting potatoes. I do appreciate all your help. :D busy_lizzie
