Title: Oca and Ulluco
Post by: CityChick on December 28, 2006, 08:41:26
RealSeeds have got some unusual tubers (http://www.realseeds.co.uk/unusualtubers.html) for sale, namely oca (Oxalis Tuberosum) and Ulluco (Ullucus Tuberosum - also, I think, known as Olluco).

Anyone tried growing them or eating them?

have eaten oca before, they came in my veg box and I had to ring up the guy to find out what they were and how to cook them!

He suggested steaming gently for a few minutes and serving with butter and seasoning or making a dauphinois with them.

I don't remember them being that tasty to be honest.

I bought some oca from realseeds a couple of years ago: pretty little tubers, pretty foliage, like oxalis. Frost-tender.

They need to be in the ground for a long time to bulk up to not very much. Also, they are rich in oxalic acid, so some people might not be so keen if they have problems with acidic food. The oxalic acid disappears after a few days in storage, but then the lemony flavour does, too, as the two are related!

Nice, but I'm not trying them again. realseeds does lots of other super stuff, and I'm working my way through their other products to try in the lotty!

Haven't tried ulloco.

I've sent for some Oca as this years "weird" crop/try something new...
I thought the lemon taste was probably the oxalic acid...
