Single row planting  18" apart

double row hedging 18" apart   15" between rows

staggered (zig zag)

I would recommend  double row planting even if you use more mature plants in one row and slips in the other.

When the time comes to shape them properly a double row can be layed over more easily making the hedge stockproof.

Look in the back pages of Garden News or Gardener's World, there are a large number of firms supplying bare root hedging plants of all descriptions and sizes.

Double rows give a thicker hedge. Don't make the common mistake of just letting them grow up. Take time over it, and cut them back hard every year, starting with first planting. This will force them to branch out low down, which is what you need for a thick hedge.
