Title: Broadies - Weevils & Choc Spot
Post by: Rhys on December 15, 2006, 13:11:19
I sowed my overwintering broadies in my polytunnel and have noticed some plants are affected by chocolate spot and weevils - I caught three of the blighters this morning. Are they normally active now? My peas are unaffected though.

I'm guessing the chocolate spot has happened because of the condensation dripping down from the plastic? I think perhaps they should be covered with a cloche to prevent this?

Chocolate spot is passed on from plant debris from previously infected plants. So, unless you have had this before in your tunnel, are you sure this is what it is?  Condensation dripping on to the plants could result in Botrytis which can look like Chocolate spot.
Damp, cool, overcrowded conditions do not help either condiition though.
Weevils are again encouraged by the mild weather and protection they get from being  undercover.

I grow mine uncovered and usually have no problems, this year they are in the end of one of my daffodils beds as there was some spare space.
