Title: Is it worth planting my teeny garlic?
Post by: shirl on December 11, 2006, 16:56:19
Hi all

I planted my garlic in March so it didnt get a good chance to grow and the bulbs were the size of marbles, with some not segmenting at all.  Anyhow I wondered whether it would be worth putting them out now to see whether I get a better crop next year... or shall I chuck them and get some organic garlic from Tesco?

Thanks  :)

If they were only the size of marbles, chuck them. If they'd got to a decent size without cloving, I'd have said persevere, but that won't do anything. I've had the same experience with garlic from local garden centres.

Thanks for that, I shan't waste my time with them.  These were from a local garden centre too.

I wont get chance to go back for a while, thats why I was wondering about organic ones from the supermarket.

The garlic from last year were nice (and strong) but I want something more substantial for my efforts  :)

Garlic that did not clove is meant to be good to put back in now.  It increases in size and cloves due to the cold it gets so go for it.

You could put it back and use it as green garlic next year, if you have a bit of space. Supermarket garlic might well be OK, but it's not guaranteed. I get mine from the Garlic Farm; expensive but excellent stuff.

Well i've got nothing to lose so I may just chuck it in a few pots and see what happens.

Thanks guys

And if you're growing it for green gasrlic, waste no room - cram it in!

When I've planted all the large cloves from my bhulbs I shove the tiny ones about an inch apart and either use the tops from Spring onwards ( like garlic chives ) or just let them bulk up to use as garlic puree.
