Title: are my strawberry plants ok?
Post by: kt. on December 07, 2006, 13:35:56
This is my first autumn planting and trying to grow strawberries for next year. Of the 24 plants, some of the leaves have gone red or brown colour. I had added extra fleece prior to the photos. Are they OK or do i need to do something fast to save them from fatality! ???

Although I'm not an expert I have grown Strawberries in pots for the last 3 years.

Each year around this time (and over the next few months) the leaves begin to go brown and die, however come Spring new foliage begins to grow from the original plants and by the summer the plants produce very delicious Strawberries!

I've spoken to a number of people about this and apparently the old leaves are supposed to die off before the new ones are produced.

Hope this helps  :)

I have always cut all the old foliage off at the end of the year to avoid any pests etc. being carried over. When we used straw to keep the fruit clean ,after picking and if the straw was nice and dry we would burn the whole lot the heat was only for a short time and did not damage the crown of the plant. It gave a good clean start.

Don't waste your fleece on them. They can look after themselve quite well.

Hi KT, Hi all  :)

Strawberry plants always look terrible at this time of year, remove any old leaves and dead stuff over the next couple of months if you like to help prevent Botrytis (grey mould) weed around them whilst you can and don`t panic. They will be a mass of bright green in a few week.

If you put fleece on strawberries they will put clumps of root and runners straight through it and you will never seperate the plant from the fleece. Which doesn`t do any harm but looks silly.  :-[
