Title: Storing Runner Beans
Post by: Slug_killer on December 06, 2006, 22:10:26
I've just been given a couple of handfulls of runner bean pods.

I don't know the variety or the chances of them growing, but ... the couple that I have removed from their pods look good solid (potentially viable) seed.

How do I store them until next April when I'll sow them ?
Should I leave them in their pods ?

Shelled, warm and dry is probably the best bet. That is what I have done for the beans that I have reclaimed ...

aha, I would leave em in their pods in a paper bag, in a cool, airy place til you need em :)

I shell them, make sure they're dry, then put them in a paper bag - dry coolish place with the other seeds. Always saved seeds, always done this. SS I shell them only for neatness & ease of storage ...can't see that there's any other need, tho :)

I would get them out of the pods as soon as possible, there is often moisture held within the pods and this can start the seed rotting. I store mine in small mesh bags that you get veg, in, this allows air to get to the seed .Anywhere cool and dry, I have saved the same variety (stenna) for many years.
