I make lots of this at this time of year and never really stick to an actual recipe - just follow my nose and taste as I go. However, I decided to check out some 'proper' recipes and there are stacks on the web. Just wondered if anyone has a 'secret' twist that they swear by. My friend used to use a glug of ginger wine in hers and it was devine!
Here's one I picked of the web just now....
Brown Sugar Mulled Wine
2 bottles dry Cabernet Sauvignon
Peel of 1 orange
1 cinnamon stick, broken into halves
8 whole cloves
1 whole nutmeg
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
orange slices
Pour wine in slow cooker. Wrap orange peel, cinnamon stick halves, cloves, and nutmeg in cheesecloth. Add to slow cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH 2 to 2.5 hours. Discard spice bag; ladle into glasses. Garnish with orange slices.
A friend does it in a similar way to that but also adds fresh lemon and orange juice, and half a glass of rum at the end to give it a kick!
MMmmm! nice with honey instead of sugar too
Some reckon a bit of sherry / madeira adds something...
Good idea using the slow cooker which I have just been given by my sister, will try that recipe.
What is also very nice is Pimms No 6 ("Winter" Pimms) with apple juice, served warm.
