What do you do for leisure/hobbies when you are not out there gardening/posting in this forum....?
currently, I am doing my website.... One night a week now, I go to evening class to learn Welsh.
I work four days a week. The rest of the time, when I'm not gardening, I ride twice a week (my friend's gorgeous ex-racehorse once a week and a lesson at riding school at weekends), I love reading (esp. Kurt Vonnegut and anything on philosophy, meditation or Buddhism), watching films (really into the films of Takashi Miike and Alejandro Jodorowski at the mo), meditating and spending time talking about all the above with lovely Mr Aqui. (plus the odd seed purchase, of course!)
Aqui - wonder what happens to the erm, manure from the horses at the riding school?
It goes on my veg patch of course! There's also a very lucky lot of allotmenteers - the riding school has an patch on the allotments over the road which serves as the muck heap, so all the veg growers over there get access to tons of the stuff!
Work 5 days a week. :(
In my spare time I:
Read - Tolkein, Raymond E Feist, Jane Austen and Hardy.
Watch Films - DVD or Cinema. Massive Lord of the rings fanatic (suprise, suprise ;)), but also love Pixar films, historical epic type films, and Richard Curtis Rom Coms.
Listen to music - Mostly new bands that don't realise that it's not the 60s or 70s any more (Vines, White Stripes etc)
Paint - Pastels and the occasional watercolour, still lifes and landscapes. Mostly in the winter when you can't do any outdoor things.
As little as possible - cooking every day - picture framing & conservation, although officially I've given it up - plebs taste in reading embraces only 'how to do or make'. I go to bed in daylight & get up at first light or before. Still fascinated by the mysteries & challenges of this machine. = Tim
I fill my hours by bringing up our 2 kids (James 3 and Jessica 5), plus entertaining Avas 8 year old daughter every other weekend. Then of course Ava takes a certain amount of looking after ::).
I knit, read, and love to cook. I also spend far too much time online chatting to friends and family and surfing. (thank god for broadband! ;D)
I adore growing anything, even cress, so my conservatory and greenhouse is packed with lovelies, some are only tiny and they all take up my time.
When all that is done, I try to see my mum as much as is practical, since dad died she is on her lonesome and my sis and I are over an hours drive from her, so we like to get over there and make a nuisance of ourselves ;D.
LAstly, getting out with Ava on the motorbike - don't do it as much as I would like, but with the summer coming we have lots of things planned! ;D ;D
Cor, what an exciting life I lead :-\
Plants have to come first ;D Well maybe 2nd after the family!Love to cook anything, make jams, pickles etc. Make wine (yum) read, have done a few crafts in my time, stained glass being one of my favorites! (note to self must start to do it again now kids are older!) Used to work 4 days but now down to 2! My computer, of course.) DIY, being a taxi Mum, running the little darlings here there and everywhere! Enjoy doing family and friends stuff, and just enjoying life and all the curveballs it throws at us!! DP
When I'm not gardening, I'm working. When I'm not working I'm with 3 yr old (often gardening then as well). Now husband is back (worked in London for the last 4 yrs) am beginning to have a life and get involved in other local stuff. I play the piano (if no-one's listening), I 'teach' Sunday School, I run my dog around the local fields and beaches (collecting seaweed of course!). I love to cook, but go through phases - I'll make bread and bagels for a week and then none for months! Biggest love is reading.
I work 9-530 in the city so get sod all free time in the week, im usually found soaking up scrumpy jack, reading, writing poetry, twanging annoyingly on a guitar, or generally fidgeting.
Sometimes i play golf, but last time, the fairway attacked me so im put off a bit now.
I daydream a lot too. :)
One thing I know is that there isn't enough time! I stopped working a couple of months agoand life has been great since. Bill stopped work due to disability some time ago so we ahve rediscovered spending time together (aaahhh!!) doing nothing much.
Of course there is mainly the allotment (love, love, love it) and until recently oldest grandchild lived with us but he has "moved on" to independence so to speak. So what do I do - well really anything I want and don't feel guilty about doing nothing at all. We have 4 younger grandchildren (14 to 3) visiting quite a lot, I love to listen to music of all kinds and lsiten to foreign radiostations on-line, like doing board games on the computer, surf the net quite a bit and of course I read (allsorts there again too, will give anything a try). I potter round the house and plan all sorts of projects which so far haven't happend but you know "manyana ( ??? ??? spelling!)
We aren't exactly prime examples of "fit and healthy" me with one lung and high blood pressure and Bill with back and leg disability but we are never just doing nothing or bored.
On top of that Edinburgh is a great place to live, great parks, seaside hills all practically on the doorstep. Now just some mediterranean type weather would make life complete!
Bit long winded this - I'm a blether! Probably should have been in profiles thread not here! Oh well ....
......as EJ says...it is nice to spend time with the children....and with EJ of course..... ;D
I leave for work at 07:30 and get home at around the same time 12 hours later....5 days a week....
...any spare time I have is DIY, building, taking things apart, trying to put them back together again....fixing things (toys usually ::) ).....
...oh, and riding the motorbike, if we get a chance.....
Keep meaning to take up some form of martial art....but ......never got round to it.....
when I'm not gardening....tend to read lots anything n everything, also paint a bit ....watercolours.
Also bring up my 7 yr old...
Work as a volunteer at musuem and help out in education area as well as in the garden..
Listen to lots of music....again anything n everything....
Like old movies.....mainly black n white ones...
Apart from all that try n find time to drink ,smoke n behave badly.......
Apart from gardening I like to buy stuff for the garden ;) ;), DIY, reading, writing, painting, sewing, computer (of course), rescuing animals, walking (up to 2&1/2 miles now, not bad for someone on crutches, wearing a leg brace and with a paralysed foot eh!!) birdwatching.........you name it I'll try it!!
Wicker,
I was born in Leith and lived there until I was 26. It's a small world. ::) My youngest son and my daughter now live in Edinburgh and my eldest lad works there 3 weeks out of four! Which part are you from? Must have a blether in the chat room sometime.
Eileen.
By heck. What a varied lot we are. And why not?
I'm a pain relief therapist 4 days a week and when I'm not doing that I'm doing my Lottie/garden things and when I'm not doing that I'm playing around making things from nothing. When I'm not doing that I'm making bird houses and feeders. When I'm not doing that I'm carving things out of wood, like house names and such. When I'm not doing that I'm making concrete boots. When I'm not doing that I'm gluing and screwing. When I'm not doing that I'm papering and painting poeples houses. When I'm not doing that I'm in the wood filming wild-life and fungi with my doggy. When I stop doing that I'll show the devil how to make a decent chimney.
Oh Ken, could I do with you ::) Since an operation on my knee some time ago I have had considerable pain.
Anyway back to the subject in hand - when I am not gardening apart from my cumputer (mainly A4A) I spend alot of time with my dogs - walk for miles. Also like listening to music, photography, playing my keyboard, knitting dolls which I then sell at craft fairs and of course looking after the house which unfortunately has to be done. Also love to watch the birds visiting my garden. Also spend too much time visiting garden centres and nurseries.
when it is raining heavily and I'm not able to garden I will usually catch up on housework, cooking, baking, sewing, very keen on knitting but practically hopeless at it. How I envy folks who could knit for Britain. Love reading very much, but can hardly find any spare time to do so.
