Title: looks like eryngium
Post by: vee on November 27, 2006, 16:33:02
A new weed popped up in the grass on my plot this summer and it looks like the pictures of eryngiums in the seed catalogues. I don't know where it's come from.

I left it as it looked so nice but I'm now wondering if it seeds everywhere and will cause real problems in the future?

It still has seed heads on and is about a foot tall. The flowers were bluish in colour and I will keep it if it's not going to be any trouble, but after reading on here about problem thistles I just wondered whether I should dig it up or not?

Picture?
A weed is a plant growing in the wrong place. Thistle like things in ones lawn are not always welcome, especiall to the bare foot brigade. If it is in the wrong place then take it out!

Sorry, I don't have a picture. It would be fine where it is - I'm just concerned about whether it will turn into a thug and seed everywhere.

If it is anything like this it can be moved, and seed should be saved to swap\sell later, sea hollies are not usually intrusive

But if it is like this, kill it

Thanks Ace -  it's definitely like the first one, although not such an intense colour.
I'll leave it where it is, which is in the grass just by my gate.
I've seen these plants at Tatton Park show and they were always sold out in the variety I wanted, so it's quite nice that one has just appeared.
