my OH spotted one in the garden a couple of nights ago. shouldn't they all be tucked up for the winter by now? do they hibernate??

we have noticed lots of young hedgehogs on the side of the road lately. Think it must be the warm weather. We rescued one a couple of years ago, Such a sweet thing. It used to eat from a spoon. (cat food of course and water not milk). We took it to an animal sanctuary that looks after them and when they are big enough they let them go in a safe place.
Down here in Kent they seem to have forgotten to hibernate as it's been so mild.
So provide a pile of logs or an old wooden box covered in leaves for them to move into. We need to look after these mobile bug munchers as much as possible!
...and compost those leaves - never burn them - and please check your bonfires before lighting them!

according to the Daily mail today there have been 3 instead of 2 broods of hedgehogs this year, not giving them enough time to build up their fat reserves.
they have hypothermia before going into hibernation,eg staggering around as if they are drunk ,and spreading themselves in the sun trying to heat up their bodies.
they suggest if you find one put it in a cardboard box with an old towel in the bottom. Offer them meat based cat or dog food,fresh water and keep them warm, then contact an animal charity for advice.
Young hedgehogs also like banana,raisins and crushed digestive biscuits/shades x
