How long do the butternuts keep for. Someone gave me one over a month ago and its still good. We can't eat a whole one so we just cut off as much as is needed. Just take a thin slice off the end and uts fresh underneath. We really like it so are gonna grow some next year. We were too late for it this year cos we only got the plot in July
Hi shirlton, I have had butternuts in the store for some weeks now ;) as well as other types of squash and half a dozen marrows ;D
If I am unable to use one all at once I usually wrap the cut edge with glad-wrap and bung it in the fridge till required ... fine for at lest a week ... though have never tired to push it further ... perhaps I should try !! ::)
And if you are worried about how long they store uncut, we just ate the last of last year's crop. I was saving it for something special but as we have a load more now I could safely eat it!

We grew butternut squashes in compost bags this year! We left them on a bit of scrappy grass at the front of the house and they grew like mad. The flowers were quite pretty and the kids cycling past were fascinated as they grew. ;D
Had never thought to cut off what we need. Always tend to cook the whole thing. Thanks for the tip! ;)
Bob
IF you like butternut - try Buttercup squash... i will never grow butternuts again now as buttercups have a much creamier texture!
I've got a good dozen in my garage just sitting around and seem to be ok. I think they last a while.

I'm growing them next year.
Doris pink sent me some seed ... had no idea what they were until they grew and we tasted them... since then i stole some more seed from SS :-)
I will give the buttercup a try then cos I haven't yet bought my seeds. Had some butternut in the curry last night. Fried it a bit first just in case it was hard. Tasted great.
Recipe from The Archers:
I" did pumpkin "wedges" the other night and thought they might be diet friendly. Cut your pumpkin flesh into big chip shape wedges. Pop them in boiling salted water for about 5 mins. Meanwhile heat a roasting tin in the oven (mega heat). drain the chips and shake to fluff up the edges. Put in the tin, drizzle oil over them and dredge with a little salt. Bake in the oven for 20 mins - 40 mins depending on how big they are."
I did this with butternut squash this evening, spinkled with chili, ginger, pepper, curry powder. Ate it with spoonful of yoghurt. Wonderful.
