I have XP, how do I get Powerpoint? Do I have to pay for it? Sorry for such a basic question, but I really am a bear of very little brain!

Unless you have friends with unlocked copies, yes. It comes in one of the MS Office bundles and the bad news is it's not the cheap version as PPT is considered over & above the basic requirement.
This is the free alternative

There also is a free Powerpoint Reader from Microsoft (a search on their website should find it) if you just need it to view other people's PPT files.
