Someone gave us some swiss chard to try. Not too keen. Put it into a stir fry. We love leafbeet but the chard was too strong tasting. I would grow it in the garden at home just for the lovely colour. Thats if Ive got any bloomin room
Don't you find the stems sweeter & less strong? Once again, garlic & lemon even things out?
What a shame, Shirl, that you don't like the taste :( But even if you or Bunjy's tribe aren't going to eat it for you, it's well worth growing the colours alone? Bright Lights is stupendous. Tell you what....imagine a hedge of it round the new shed that Tone's going to create/erect..... ;D

??? I'm being abso-bluddy-lutely serious Shirl 8) Actually, have picked a bagful this afters & was thinking of you...Bunjy's kiddies got the sort of pets that eat green stuff? Or anyway, it's good for the compost heap 8)
Still think that a nice hedge of those gloriously coloured stems surrounding the patio made of a few slabs that Tone's gonna lay for you after he's codged up one shed out of two when he's gotta minnit to spare ::) will be just great. And you and your mum can sit there drinking in the beauty of the chard and a cuppa tea while Tone gets stuck into the Big Dig 8)

I'm the only one here who eats it-or so THEY think. HA... it goes in all the stews, pot roasts, mixed veg etc. But it is a thing of beauty isn't it. ;D
we were like that with kale, didn't know only to eat the new light green leaves, ended up on the bog for 2 days, it's the only plant we've found that not even slugs and caterpillars like to eat. ours also ended up on the compost heap :D
It just cheers you up to see it especially now with so little to see
I have to defend kale - we adore it, it's so easy to grow & you can pick & pick & it grows more & more - mine carried on till March last year. We eat big dark leaves as well as the light ones & have never had any ill effects.
We have rabbits but there are quite a few things that they cannot eat. I will have to have a look see if they can have it. They do have spinach and thank goodness cabbage. they can't eat lettuce its not good for them.
So right about Kale, Mary - it's the person, not the Kale that causes upsets!
And if folk don't like the 'furriness' of some varieties of Chard, just purée it in a white sauce.
I think it was just the amount we ate :)
