I've just recieved some shallot sets and two varieties of garlic (purple wight and elephant). I know I can plant the garlic about now but the instructions that came with them say to store in a cool light place and sow in March/April.
I've read some posts here which suggest that shallots planted now will grow as spring onions.
Is it worth planting them now? I've just taken on my plot and would love to be growing something over the winter other than green manure!
our site rep says, plant shallots on the shortest day, harvest on the longest ::)
in my mum's Northumberland veg garden, they went out in March. Here in Peterborough I've just planted ten - they were in the garlic bag so I just kept going :P
Hope this isn't going to lead to :'( ???

Hi, its a bit early yet. Mid to late winter is more usual. I normally put mine in during a mild spell in January.
Surely a waste of good seed to grow shallots as Spring Onions?
And, for what its worth, I have never strayed from the 'book' teaching of February - April. There's no rush?
oh dang :-\ :-[
well it's only ten ::)
Cheers
I'll put the garlic in this weekend and try to resist the temptation to plan the shallots too. I like the idea of gardening according to wisdom handed down the generations so I'll try planting as near to the longest day and see what happens - lots of :D and not any :'(
Tim - no, no rush: just recieved my first sets in the post this morning and am keen to get planting! I agree with you about the planting shallots for spring onions, rather wait for the shallots.
supersprout - never mind, you don't know what'll grow, and if not, it's only 10 like you say
