Title: dentist tomorrow
Post by: shirlton on November 02, 2006, 18:35:18
I'm off to the dentist tomorrow. For most people this is an ok thing. For me it is the worst ordeal I can think of. I have to have a root filling. They tried happy gas on me a few weeks ago but I had a bad reaction, Tomorrow I am being sedated and they are going to try again. Apparently you are not asleep but don't remember anything. Even so I am still terrified. I have to go to the other side of Birmingham for the treatment. If anyone sees a white suzuki campervan speeding through Birmingham after 2.30 pm, it will be Tony my husband making the most out of the time when I am not capable of telling him how to drive. Think of me at 1.15 pm won't you

I KNOW how folk can hate the visit, but I have had at least 4 root fillings - with just the usual painless (if uncomfortable) injection, & they have been a doddle. Truly!!

Shirlton, as most good people know on here already, I am terrified of the dentist.

Sedation is a godsend.  I had it for the first time last year and it's fantastic.  With me you are talking about somebody who becomes almost hysterical whilst in the waiting room and sobs and shakes like a baby whilst having treatment but I strongly recommend sedation because not only do you feel nothing, you remember nothing either!  Yeeehaaaa!

Hope everything goes OK for you tomorrow.  One of my daughters is a dental nurse (she always holds my hand) and another is a Dental Hygienist.  Trouble is they have no idea what it is really like to be terrified of going to the dentist (they haven't got a filling between them).  I think it must be my age as I was always terrified of the school dentist.

I always used to be terrified of dentists as I could always feel everything they did; the anaesthetic didn't work properly. I finally found one who knew how to do it, and I'm OK now.

Thakyou all so much. After reading your posts I am feeling a lot better. I 'm usually pretty fearless, but not with dentists. I get in the chair and I won't evevn open my mouth. My dentist is very understanding so I know I will be ok. Its just that when she said sedation I thought I would be out of it not awake. Your comments Yellow Petals have really helped. Watch this space

Shirl, I'm glad it has helped a little bit.  Like you, when I first realised sedation was not a knock out, I panicked.  I can honestly say it's just as good as.  My mad Japanese dentist (who insists on explaining to me every time I visit that Abba's song Souper Trouper is actually about a circus light) talked me through what happened.  You can hold a perfectly legitimate conversation with someone whilst under sedation, you feel absolutely nothing of your treatment and obviously you don't go to sleep.  Infact, mine was so good, I don't even remember my husband picking me up and taking me home!  Hahahaha.  It's a doddle and you're going to be just fine.

Always remember what somebody told me - the thought of having treatment at the dentist is actually far worse than the treatment itself.  I say this to myself over and over when I'm on the way to the dentist and it does help a little bit.

Well everyone. I can honestly say that I won't be having anymore nightmares about going to the dentist. If any of you are afraid of going to the dentist I would highly recommend the sedation I had. Iwas not asleep but the hour and a quarter i was in there was like 5 mins. I fully expected to be drowsy afterwards but within an hour I was more or less normal (well as norm as is poss) I had a great nights sleep and am ready to get up to our half plot and sort the fire out for tonite. Thankyou all again for the support

So glad Shirley that all went well. I must tell my son, he has had a"niggly" tooth for weeks but won't go to the dentist.

If you can bear to talk about it, Shirl, what exactly was the sedation??

Shirley. How is it given please? Told my son and he said "Yes but I bet it is given by injection"... He has a real phobia about needles, if you were to sit and talk about injections he would walk out of the room.

I am sure they would be able to give him something to calm him down before they injected him Lorna. You have to ask for these things.

Thanks, Shirl.

But if you've gone as far as an injection - & that has deadened everything - how much more does the M thing do??

If it's anything like the stuff I was given when I had camera in the gut it was worth the injection.Wowwwwwwwww what a feeling--- and no hangover  ;D.

If you could see me on the day I am due to go to the dentist you would know why I need the injection to calm me down, I am not afraid of injections. It's just a phobia I have about someone messing in my mouth.lol. they can mess with my head as much as they like pmsl

Shirlton, super news.  Very pleased it worked out ok for you and your fears are now put a little more at ease!  Like you, when having major work done, I do not panic quite so much knowing I can have this done.

How was yours done?  With me it was an injection to the back of the hand and voila.  I remember nothing else until back home on the sofa in my front room!
