Title: Backing up.
Post by: tim on October 28, 2006, 07:17:14
Need to back up before installing IE7 - unless advised against that!!

What I have on the PC is, in several cases, less than what is on the portable HDD.

Will that reduce the HDD's content, by the amount I've deleted from certain files on the PC, or just add anything that is new?

Sorry Tim, coulld you write that a touch clearer, what do you mean by several cases? do you mean CD's?
Have you backed up your full PC or just your data.

BTW Mozilla Firefox 2.0 was released ths week, IMO better than IE7 and less chance of killing your PC

Thanks for the FF info, Glowy.

Clearer? Don't know!!
For instance, I have a number of photo folders. They were backed up a while ago. Since then I have deleted many of the photos or moved them to different folders.
If I now back up the folders that I have changed, will the portable drive then only show the modified folders - deleting what I have deleted - or will it just add anything that I have added
on the PC?

Does that help??

ahh now I understand.

If you have backed up using windows backup it backups the files and a link to their originl locations. If you have used an incremental backup it will record all unique instances of files and their locations. If you have used a "replace backup" and overwritten the original backup the backup will only know the last set of backed up files eg your computer on the date of the backup.

When restoring a backup the software will prompt you to make a few choices.

1 will be to backup to the files originl location or to an alternative location. Using the original location saves time but you can overwite files accidentaly.

2 The software will ask you what to do if it comes across the same file in the same location. Ignore or overwrite the file

3 the software will sak you if you wnt to restore the lot or just selected files.

------------------

if you have just backed up by dragging files to another drive just drag them back to where you want them

_----------------

Hope this helps

BTW if you have (heaven forbid) a non-genuine version of windows don't install IE7 as it will check the authenticity of your OS
