Title: Summer fruiting raspberries
Post by: autumn leaf on October 27, 2006, 17:15:01
Early in the year I bought some summer fruiting raspberry plants.  They have grown well but have not produced any fruit at all this year.  Do I cut them down now or leave them in the hope that they will flower and fruit next summer? All guidance gratefully received. :-\ :)

I'm sure there was a thread on this a little while ago but I can't find it.

I think the advice was that if they haven't fruited leave them alone because you only cut down canes that have fruited whether they are summer or autumn, but I know there's a pro out there who can be definitive about it.  :)

Yes, summer fruiting rasps fruit on Year 2's wood.
A tip from Barnsdale for summer fruiters: tie in the year-old shoots now. After fruiting next year, you can tell which canes to prune after the fruit has finished because they're the ones that are tied 8) otherwise it's hard to tell :-[ :D
Autumn Fruiters: just prune the whole thing at ground level. Peasy!

I've just bought ten plants of Autumn Bliss ;)

:)Thanks for that - I will leave well alone and hope for a harvest next summer! :)

Thanks- I needed to know that, too, as my summer ones did nothing this year- thought I'd planted them wrong!
