well, the fruit trees have come in to our lidl, priced £3.99, no sign of the bushes yet, they look pretty healthy though
I had a look on their website and it doesn't look as though they will be in at our local store. Where are they going to be in please? What location?
they weren't on our website, they were just by the door today, 3 varieties of apple, 2 plums, 2 pears and a morello cherry, that I saw

Lidls in Norwich had lots of big healthy looking fruit trees but no room for them here. Did buy loads of acrylic paints & canvases - spent 90 quid must be something of a record. Daughter & I had great fun getting them all home on our bikes in the wind.

Oh Booger, hubby literally just walked in from lidls where he bought his cheapo beer and my cheapo vino collapso! >:( Will have to quiz him on this weeks contents of Lidls)
not a fan of the place meself, cheap which is GREAT, but find it is like shopping at a jumble sale for me! >:( ;)

I bought two victoria plum trees and one stella cherry, which are now in the ground.
They also had greengages which were very tempting, I already have apples and pear from previous years. This years trees seem very sturdy.
One local (Norwich) shop had none and the assistant knew nothing about them (and was useless and off-putting) but I went to the other afterwards as I thought I`d rather trust Marymary. :)
I was able to carry them to my plot which is close by. If I had space I`d plant an orchard.

I bought 3 apple trees last year and have trained them as espaliers along a wall - had 2 cox's, 3 bramleys and one granny smith fruit this year. Am looking forward to a real harvest next year. Also bought two pear trees from Woolworth's last year too. They were more expensive at £7 each, but one is a 'family' tree, so I'm looking forward to seeing some fruit next year. Oh yes, bought two goosegog bushes at the same time from Lidl which have grown well. Does anyone know when I can expect them to produce fruit?

Hi Tricia,
If mine are anything to go by you`ll get a little fruit next year and loads the year after. Don`t prune the bush till its bigger except to open up the centre, or take off damaged wood if necessary.

having now read the cherries are self-pollinating, i might take one back and swap it for a plum.
I'm sure they will survive in my giant pots until I get the lottie, just need to evaculate the holly and leeks first !

You were right manicscousers. They did have them. I bought 5 trees and am off in the morning to get fruit bushes which are due in then. Thanks again!!

They are also in the Derby branch, just picked up some fruit trees (sounds like the same varieties everywhere), also some black and redcurrant bushes, and raspberry canes for 99p each.
Now I've just got to work out exactly where to put them all....
plums gone when i took my cherry back, so got a cox's orange pippen instead which helps pollinate the other two apparently, plus 2 goosgogs and 3 rasps.
all the trees are in, now to figure out where to put the bushes.
i have a plan.

I bought a golden gage plum tree. :) Now after reading what everyone bought I feel like I should go back for some more! Problem is, I'm not allowed to plant a tree in my lottie ::)
I got a redcurrant bush from lidl this spring and it's doing really well. ;D

I had to go across to Lidl, didn't I? :P - and came back with a Victoria plum which is self-pollinating and another Bramley. All the fruit bushes had gone already. I've just planted the plum in a large pot and will have to hope for the best as I have no other space in my small walled garden. Gordon is going to remove a morello cherry tree and replace it with the Bramley, which gives him four apple trees. He was so frustrated this year. The cherry fruited well for the first time and although we had draped the tree with fine netting, he went out one morning to find that every single cherry had gone >:(. That finished him as far as the cherry tree was concerned. It was a gift from his daughter and he needed an excuse to remove it ::). I think he might have kept if it had been an eating cherry though :).

i went in today and i was like a kid in a toy store. they have a hundred and 1 rose bushes at 99p i think. they had loads of different types of flowering shrubs at 99p each...and some fruit bushes at 99p each. They also had the fruit trees. 2 types of pears, 2 types of apples and a cherry. all £3.99. And everything there looked really healthy. they were all bare rooted but were all full of strong thick branches and full of fresh looking buds.

I wanted a stella cherry but lidl had none. I saw only 3 kinds of apples, 2 kinds of pears and golden gage plum. I'm itching to go back to lidl today. ::)
got myself some red currents and gooseberries but sadly no fruit trees yet - i'll keep checking though

The pears are 2 different kinds - but are not self-pollinating. According to the labels I may have made a mistake because they mention different kinds for pollinating (which I don't have).
Will the pears still pollinate or is there no chance :(?
even I succumbed and I have masses of fruit - 4 pears, 2 each of Doyenne (can be difficult) and Beurre Hardy - both these are of different pollinating times but these times are only guides and you have to wait and see, hand pollinate with a paint brush if necessary and if this doesn't work then yes, you'll need a pollinator for each group
It brings a song to my heart that so many people are planting fruit trees and I really hope they work out well for all who have bought them - good luck to all :)
Dan should start up a communual Lidl fruit bush and tree blog.

I have a morello cherry against a wall, and don't have a problem with the birds as the snails get there first..! Which I find very bizarre.
Does anyone know whether anywhere (Lidl/Netto/Aldi/Woolies/etc) is selling fruit trees on rootstocks that aren't completely dwarf? Wouldn't mind getting a mini-orchard going in the front garden, but they'd need to be nearer 12 feet high rather than about 8 feet..

Pears fall into pollination groups. Which varieties have you got RW?
Even if they are in different groups, don't despair. One group will normally pollinate the two on eithe side of it (so Group 2 will pollinate Groups 1,2 and 3), and there may well be otehr trees in the area to provide pollen. If you're not sure of the groups, just give the varieties; it's easy to find out.
Went to Lidll today and all they had was granny smith apples and a pear. had a look round and Tony bought a set of saws. Been sawing logs for the bonfire all afternoon
shame you don't live near wigan, still got greengages, granny smith apples, stella cherries, plus a pear, not sure of the type
I have a Pear Doyenne du Comice and a Pear Beurre Hardy. Will they pollinate?

Beurre Hardy is Group B, and Comice Group C, so you should be OK. Beurre is strong growing and slow to fruit, and not necessarily reliable. It's supposed to be picked in mid-September and eaten in October, but I just pick pears when they're ready to drop. Comice is really good-tasting, but a light cropper and not always reliable. It's supposed to be picked in mid-October and eaten in November-December.

time will tell when you see the blossom arrive and as long as one isn't early in group 2 and the other really late in group 3 then pollination should happen, do it by hand if necessary - if after a few years they are not 'marrying' then you will need pollinators
at £3.99 this is exciting whatever the outcome - I never read the small print does anyone know the source of these trees :-\

Planted all 6 trees today. The cherries and apples have good roots. However most of the roots for both pear trees have been cut off and there is not much root left - hopefully they will grow ok.

Prune them right back to the trunk, as that will encourage them to grow. I should have done it with some of mine when I planted them; they haven't thrived and I'll be cutting them back as soon as the leaves drop. Others have really flourished.

thanks, I'd already done a bit of research on this but plant passports don't really mean much as far as, well anything really :-\ but I was more interested in where these trees are coming from, i.e. who is supplying them a british nursery or ???
planted mine out today - roots on all except one looked good (4 pears), soaked in manured water for about an hour and staked when planted, they look good and healthy, time will tell :)
I have a question (being a novice fruit grower!) - When can I expect crop from my golden gage tree from lidl? :-\ I planted it in a pot straight after I bought it.
not sure a pot is the best idea for a golden gage (oullins) as it tends to be a vigourous grower and will soon outgrow even a large pot - you have to be patient with nearly all fruit and even when the blosson appears in plenty it still needs to establish itself well - so a few years, say another 2 or 3 at least
it is hard to say how old the fruit trees are that Lidl's are supplying - I would guess 1 or 2 year olds, don't know what the root stock is either - this will all affect the cropping time and amount
we don't have any fruit trees or bushes in the Halifax Lidl, went down yesterday and lad at counter said they havn't had any in and wasn't expecting a delivery of any, so I asked the manager he said the same :(

Thanks calendula. I'm planning to move this winter (I'm in the middle of house hunting) and hoping that I will find a house with a garden where I can plant my golden gage. Do you think it's ok in a pot until I'v moved? Also I would like to train the golden gage. Is it possible or do I need a younger tree? ??? Sorry for asking so many questions. I haven't got a clue when it comes to fruit trees. :-

I do like the idea of festooning it. I was thinking of fan but I don't want to force my plum tree into a fan if it will not do well.

Tora, the plum tree did ok thanks very much. This year was a good year all round for fruit, but wasn't sure if this tree would suffer because of the move. I did make an effort to water it when there was no rain, and did get quite a few plums from it.
