Title: Dan Please Help
Post by: Mimi on April 15, 2004, 07:34:38
I have just had an email from Hppt, to inform me that as from April 26th of this year they will no longer allow links to any sites  or discussion boards. :o  As I am sure that you  know most of us use this route to post in the gallery. Any suggestions as to alternate routes to post pictures in the gallery/ :-\ Thanks

Yes i too would LOVE to know how we are supposed to post pictures to this site (for free) once Hpphoto stops us linking to this site. HPphoto has been proven as the best one for posting pictures from to A4all (reliably that is).

I know one thing I shall probably close my Hpphoto account after April 26!

This is all news to me ???  As yet I have not received an e-mail from HP.  What am I going to do - took me ages to master the HP source for photos - what now :o

It does seem to be the case. Advice from HP is to co-ordinate with the site provider. Posting pic's has to be in a way that the site recognises. Over to Dan on this one. (As tho' he doesn't have enought work, already....?)

Tim,

Yup you can still post directly.

As for what other site you can use for free, erm  - I'll have to look into it !

If anyone has any suggestions, please let us know.

Out of interest, do HP give a reason for stopping the facility ?

Cheers

Dan

Hi all,

I use; http://www.picturetrail.com

OK it is not free .............you get a free trial for around a month.

I found it is reasonably priced.........it costs $19.95 Us which converts to £11.22 per annum.

I wanted something reliable because I am planning to link my website to it.

I get 50mb or 500 pictures of space, a free bit of 'upload' software which is very good.

You can choose your own frames, backgrounds, connect to sites such as this. So on the whole I am finding it goos value for money.

Have a look at a year in my garden at http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid4116480 to see how it works

edit; ps I have had my HP e-mail as well.

HP - reason? - so that they could improve their services. Yes, of course, those which are paid for??

As for me, now that I've sorted the A4A facility (thanks Dan) I shall stay 'in-house' - much more friendly - & pay whatever is asked. The OAP has just gone up 7p/wk!!

Latest attempt under 'spuds in'. = Tim

I have spent the last few days working my way through as many of the other Web sites which offer free Photo storage and as far as I can see Hp Photo was the only one which allowed direct access to its site from here. All the others would require people on A4A to go through an link.
Sorry folks, but even £12 a year is more than I can afford, so that is it.

Such a realistic attitude, Eric.  But I'm willing - and just able - to offer the price of 'one glass' a month (or is yours homebrew?) for the fun of posting. So you'll have to suffer a bit from here.

SO sad to think that you - and others? - will not continue to display your goodies.

Maybe a good fairy will come along? But one can see the point of not giving everyone a free ride??  Mail me your pics & I'll post them. I must be joking?? But I would try. = Tim

Eh! Come-on....lets all send an 'E' to HP. I use their products, I use their services, I buy stuff from them...This is a kick in the teeth.....LET'S COMPLAIN!!

(might not work...but it also might....My 'E' goes off right now!)

Good fighting talk!
An afterthought - we can still post a URL for pics held in space, can we not??
Not quite the same, I admit. = Tim

I'm with you Ken.  I too buy their products as I have an Hp printer. Do you really think it will make any difference though :-\

Nearly everyone who conects to the internet via an ISP (such as blueyonder, ntl, freeserve etc) get web space.

This can be used to put pictures on - it is quite easy to do once you get the hang of it - normally using FTP software.

It would be slightly different for each ISP, but we could try to get together some hints and tips - any interest ?

Cheers

Oh yes dan, great!

I have often looked at AOLs free hosting but never had the courage to try it out. I get a few MBs free with the membership so should be enough for a few pics etc.

I'll have a go at getting this started - but once again, I need the help of the "cr*p-busters" among us, to iron out the many wrinkles!

Step 1 - the "holder file".

1.1 - Right click on your desktop, choose "new", and "folder" - and make a folder; let's call it webpics.

1.2 - Click Start, then Run;  enter notepad, and then "OK"

Now type in (or copy and paste)

Quote
<html>

<head>
<title>My web pictures</title>
</head>

<body>

</body>
</html>

1.3 - Save this file in your "webpics" folder - call it index.html (no capitalisation!).

Step 2 - the photos you want

Save a copy of the photos you want to use in your "webpics" folder as a .jpg file.  A few fiddly tricks and hintsto save frustration later.

- Use recognisable short names, like plot1.jpg, pumpkin1.jpg, pumpkin2.jpg, pumpkin3.jpg - etc
- remember the .jpg at the end of the file name
- don't use capital letters in the file names!  Yes, I know it sounds silly - but it is a bit of good practice which may avoid all sorts of frustration later on!

Step 3 - Linking your photos to the "holder file", index.html

3.1 - Open Notepad again, and open your index.html file in the "webpics" folder

3.2 - For each photo you want to add, add the extra line in the "body" section, including the appropriate photo file name within "".

Quote
<html>

<head>
<title>My web pictures</title>
</head>

<body>

<img src="plot1.jpg" border="0">
<img src="pumpkin1.jpg" border="0">
<img src="pumpkin2.jpg" border="0">
<img src="pumpkin3.jpg" border="0">

</body>
</html>

SPELLCHECK - go back and check that you have included all the < and  > brackets;  now check you've included all the slashes - the /'s; and now check all the ""s.

3.3 - Save the file, and close Notepad

3.4 - now, just for fun, click on index.html in your webpics folder - and your browser SHOULD open up, and display your first webpage!  It won't be beautiful - but your photos should be!  (and by now you may have the bug - start learning a bit more HTML?)

Step 4 - Uploading the file to your free web-space - the quick, dirty, easy, and freest way of all! :) :) :)

4.1 - You need some information from/for your ISP.   I had a look at a couple of ISPs; the information can be found - don't be put off by the huge amounts of info you don't need at the moment.

A - the address your ISP uses to store your files, for the FTP transfer programme (it will be somewhere in the help section - the address you are looking for will be something (?) like uploads.webspace.ISPname.net).

B - your user ID and your password, from the initial connection information you got from your ISP;  you can also see it in your dial-up window.

4.2 - Connect to the internet, and open Internet Explorer.You now have a wonderful blank space in your browser page - I hope!

4.3 - transferYup - you've just done a simple FTP file transfer!  Without ANY fancy bits of kit! :) :) :)

4.4 - Now go back to the help pages for your ISP, and somewhere you will find what http address you need, so you can find your site (and link the photos to A4A - eg mine is http://keirg.freeserve.co.uk.

Go on - type the right http address;  are you on?  Has it worked?

Step 5 - If all has gone well, you now have a very basic page on the web!   It is crude, but will work as a "holder" for your photos that you want to link to A4A  (as in the post much further up this thread).

6.1  To add more pics, just copy the new photo to your webpics folder, open Notepad, and add another <img src="pumpkin3.jpg" border="0"> line.

6.2  To remove pics, just delete the relevant <img src="pumpkin3.jpg" border="0"> line, and delete the photo from the "webpics" folder.

And then use the same FTP trick in Internet Explorer to upload your new index.html file and new photos to your webspace.  You can also delete unwanted files from your ISP server from the same ftp page!

Fiddly?  Yes, it is the first time - but you are setting up a "system".  maintaining your photo page and updating it, is very quick and easy afterwards.

Go on - have a go!  And tell me where it doesn't work, please!

Good luck - Gavin

But I'm still looking for a simple, clear, friendly (and FREE!) FTP programme.

I can certainly vouch for the fact that the setting up with the html is quite easy and does not take much time.

The problem is the bl**dy file transfer (ftp)! grrr!

AOL (my isp) is particularly difficult to run FTP on and get the desired result (seems to bear no relation to gavin's instructions for a start).  I can get stuff to upload but only one pic at a time. Cant seem to select all the pictures in one go.

Does anyone have any experience of FTP on AOL?

If so.. HEEEELLLLPPPPP!!

Oh lordy, too much to read, I just don't have the time or patience to read carefully how to do it all. Actually what I'm saying is I'm lost and just plain don't understand it. I'll just wait and see what happens and hope something I can understand comes along.

Thanks to those who took the time and have the patience to try and explain it all. I'm sure others will be helped by it.

For the benefit of penniless folks like myself we have found a method of posting photos on here which is both free and easy. Easier than Hp photo in many ways. Only problem is that you need to get the size of the photo sorted out BEFORE sending it to the halfway house.
With a deep bow of apprecaition and gratitude to Budgebreeder who found the site.
An instruction sheet is available for those who downloaded Photo Manger from HP. Useful also to those who can re-size using their own photo manipulation program.

Thank you BB and Eric for the information about photobucket.com.  I have joined but am a little confused ???

I have HP photo manager so can resize my photos before submitting. I created a new album in photobucket, then tried to upload a photo from my resized HP photo album.  Clicked 'submit' and although it said that I had one photo - it also said that my newly created album was empty.

I hope you can understand what I am trying to say - not very clear I know.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you been back since and had another look at your Album? I had no problems other than finding the best size for posting on here. 250pixels wide and reduced to 50% on Bucket is the one above. Please try again.

I have been back Eric and my photo has appeared.  I will now try to transfer it.  The photo is of a friendly squirrel which came right up to me at Kew Gardens.
(http://img55.photobucket.com/albums/v168/gardengirl2004/Squirrel.jpg)

Great, it works - but I think I will have to make the pics a bit smaller.  I resized it to 600 as I have previously, but it has come out much larger.  I will use 250 in future as suggested by you Eric.

Ha! It works. Thanks everybody. It's a nice, simple site.

I had some trouble at first when I used other symbols than letters and numbers in the name of the pictures and they were not accepted. Sometimes it pays off to have the patience to carefully read what the screen says when things don't work hahaha.
