Title: how to make a wormory?
Post by: cambourne7 on October 22, 2006, 17:43:45
... anyone know how to make one out of wood?

I dont want anything big as most of my stuff at home goes into green bin collection. So i need something that i can put spoiled veg into and some green material.

Hi Cambourne7, I've got a (bought) wormery, and found the advice on this forum very helpful - I'm sure I've seen 'build your own' tips, and they would be willing to give you advice if you posted a thread.

hello,
I have a wormery but I find that if you set up what I call a gaia cone it is much more effective.
Making your own from recycled materials is a much cheaper option.
You need a plastic bin, a compost bin is great. Dig a hole 40cm deep and sink your bottemles bin or composter into the hole. Push the earth around the sides until leval with rest of soil.
You can work it like a normal composter you put the stuff in, replace the lid and the heat build up takes back 80% the contents back to its original form water. The remaining sludge or matter is then broken down by worms and carried into your garden. The worms will find it and visit and take away all the goodness into your garden.
I have a number of these in my garden and they have substansually changed the soil for the better. My friends have also laughingly set them up and call them bottemless pits.

I find that using a wormery takes longer to get going and doesn't have the same large scale impact.

You can leave your bottemless pit in place once set up. If you ever move it you find the ground is crawling with worms. Some people line the base with mesh to prevent vermin.

hope this helps.
