Hello all as you know i've built wind turbines before and now i've got a new lottie i am starting again. ;D
The trouble is i can't find any sturmey archer hubs, thses are the ones on the old chopper bikes front wheels, i've tried e-bay and google but as yet no joy. :-\
Is there anyone out there who could help an old mad inventor solve this little problem as he wants to try lifting the roof off the shed again ;D ;).
Cheers you mad lot :o .
Sorry wouldn't know what one looked like if it landed on my front lawn.Just wanted to ask if we could have a piccie this time before it takes off!!!!I do so admire your skill and ingenuity.
Hi BB, how's your little bairns doing?
Well it looks like a round thingy has 2 terminals coming outa the top and a spindle in the middle, good description eh ;D.
As for the pictures no problem i'll get an ariel view of your lottie when i pass over it on the shed roof hehehehehehe.
For the skill well, i'm good with me hands so peeps say (specially the wife ;D), ingenuity don't know what that means so i can't answer ;D but i'll not be beaten so if anymore of you can help an old druken seadog then i'll try to sober up and build the bl**dy thing.
What are you going to do with it, Jethro, charge batteries? I'm trying to figure out how to build one to pump water. Snag is it's going to need to be too big to be allowed! :-\
Those Chopper bikes are collector's items, so getting hold of a spare wheel could be difficult -but you could try an owners club.
Actually, was in Halfords at the weekend and they have started selling the Chopper again!
Hi ross, i know have you seen the bl**dy price of them though, the cheapest was £800, and to think i used to smash them to bits when i was younger and that was only 2 years ago ;D.
Thanks for the owners tip though will try that ;D.
Hi Ken i'm going to heat the green house over the winter, try building archemedes (is that spelt right?) screw, done that on the last site brought water up from the river used it to water my plants in the greenhouse on a drip system. Or try a sloar panel they are good.
Jethro, what height/head can I expect from an archimedes screw using a bike peddle/wheel assembly?
Solar panel is pricey considering the motor I would need too.
Hi Boys
Have you got a local council tip? do they have a recycling shop thing? both Rugby and Leamington spa do. I go to use the recycling facilities cardboard pop bottles etc. and rarely come home empty handed.
Keep your eye on any skips and what about carboot sales?
Do I come across as a bit of a scrounger? ;)
Is it only chopper style bikes that have the bit you are after?Regards Liz ( also known as skippy for my inability to pass a skip without having a look)
Hi me again
Do you have a free paper in your area called Friday ads they also have a web site or a free ads section of your local paper you could put a wanted ad in the paper or local shop.
I am brimming with scrounging ideas today.
Regards Liz
Hi loopyliz, thanks for the advice but i have done all that, sorry :-\
Hi ken the solar panels are really cheap man, if you want drawings of the turbines and other great thingys go to,
www.rainbowtradingpost.co.uk
These are really good for building daft things ;D
Hope this helps Ken.
I keep meaning to get the local scout group to build a Savonius turbine "as a project" - the plans do show how to build the dynamo, but my eyes and winding copper wire coils aren't terribly compatible any more.
Hi gilgamesh, if you send me a PM with your address i'll send you a plan for a savonius without the winding coil or dynamo ;D.
Good God - this is beginning to sound like a primary school Egypt project! :) :) :)
Archimedes screw? We'll have a shadoof next. Not knocking, just enjoying - especially as they were so much still in use when I was living in Egypt. Aaah - happy days! :) :) :)
But back to Jethro's first question - the oldest, most out-of-the-way cycle shop? Somewhere like York/Tadcaster, with a long cycling tradition (where people still use tricycles)? Been there for years, frontage falling off, owner hunch-backed and D*ckensian (hmmmph!) - you know the sort of place. And deep in the bowels of that shop - he may just have what you're looking for? Or an equivalent?
Been there? D*mn, I knew you'd have beat me to it. :) :)
Good luck, Gavin
Cheers gavin i never thought of York, it's me mind you see to much rum ;D . I've got next week off so i'll go down and have a rummage about :P. I knew someone would come up with a sensible idea, once again thanks for the tip, will let you know how things are progressing.
Peter
