Title: Mixing Runner Bean Varieties
Post by: Barnowl on October 20, 2006, 13:53:17
Just doing some planning for next year while I can remember what happened this year....

Can you grow different varieties of runner bean alongside one another on the same framework?

This year we just had Enorma and although it was OK, I want to try several varieties as soon as possible.

Also toying with the idea of Tim's outward leaning frame  (you can tell I miss my meccano set) - our frame runs East West so I think it might give more light to the North facing side

I find Scarlet Emperor, Painted Lady and Sunset are a good combination, the sunset are still flowering and setting reasonable beans!
;D

Yes - aim to spread the cropping time.

Thanks, spreading the season is an aspect of the grand design! This year I planted out seedlings in May and seeds directly a month later on the North facing side but the crops pretty much coincided

Scarlet Emperor looks good for "main". I've got SunBright for later, so will go for Sunset for the earlier.

(you'd think they'd be the other way round ?)

Many thanks for the advice.
