Title: flowering chery tree
Post by: Shirley on October 18, 2006, 18:48:30
In 1969 a  flowering cherry was planted by a neighbour on the boundary of our gardens, about 16ft from my house.  This tree has caused us problems over the years, mainly from the roots producing suckers all across the lawn. Another major problem was when the roots heaved the foundations our shed, which meant we had to dismantle the shed, hack the roots, the relay in paving and reassemble the shed.  This week, the current occupiers of the house have had the tree removed, but the cowboys who hacked the tree down have left a 2ft  high stump.  What I would like to know that is this tree likely to start producing new shoots and suckers.  The neighbour "couldn't care less" as they cannot see the stump as it is hidden by their hedge.

drill a hole into the stump and pour in stump killer.

Thanks, that's a possibility, but it isn't in my garden, so I will have to be careful.  If it is not likely to start sprouting or producing more suckers, then it can rot away in their garden.  Sadly, they are not very approachable people.

I know how horrible ornamental cherries can be - we have suckers all over the front lawn, but at least the trees are in our garden and they'll be destined for the chop once they've dropped their leaves. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the stump resprouted.. I'd probably wait until it looks like it's going to cause trouble, then speak to the neighbours and ask if it's okay if you kill the stump properly..

I just don't see the point of planting ornamental fruit trees.. ours are only pretty for about 2 weeks of the year. :/

Thanks,  I will keep an eye on it.  Any suckers which have appeared over the years I have painted with brushwood killer.

I did ask these neighbours a few years back if I could get someone in the cut back all the branches which were overhanging our garden.  They responded "do what you are legally entitled to do, as long as it dos not cost us money!"  I was very temped to  follow the letter of the law and hand them back all the branches :)
