Title: whats on my chilli plants
Post by: minx on October 18, 2006, 15:16:40
planted some chillis and I've brought them indoors, now the leaves have a lot of 'things' on them, kinda clear green jelly like eggs. haven't seen anything flying around.  Are these greenfly eggs and if so how do I get rid of them - they're sticky as well.

any comments appreciated.

try some soapy water sprayed on the leaves to see if they fall off.

Probably not greenfly but some smaller form of aphid so I'd also go for soapy water as first port of call.

I got something on mine too like cobwebs on the plant but couldn't see any spiders.

Rosyred,

Have the leaves started to go a bit speckled?

Going brown if I remember right before all the leaves fell off. Had it in my kitchen on the windowsill but its out the garden now.

I think that's Red Spider Mite  (RSM to pros like Tim).

Outside is the best place for the plant - it might infect others and the weather's still pretty mild. You'll need to clean all around where it was inside with some disinfectant or similar. If near window look for a transparent sticky coating on the glass and hit that as well.

When I've had RSM in the past I've cut the plant right back to about a six inch stem, put it outside, given it a good wash, left it outside for a week or so, then brought it back in.

They usually start sprouting new leaves etc very quickly, but it does depend to some extent on the variety. Do you know what it is?
