Title: Herons Nesting!!!!!!
Post by: gardenqueen on October 18, 2006, 00:22:13
Looking over in to woods, near an office I was visiting, two my surprise I saw a pair of herons nesting! Surely this is not the norm at this time of year? This is in South Wales by the way.

IT definitely isn't; those must be very confused herons if they really are nesting!

I too saw a couple of sparrows investigating the sparrow terrace Nest box this morning.  What is going on??  Off course they may be thinking this will be a good place to sleep in during the winter months!!!  The young herons are all over the place just now becuase the parents have chased them off to fend for themselves.  One of them days I will capture a Heron on its daily visit to my garden.  I crawl along the floor  ;D ;D with my camera and point the camera at the heron but just one twitch of the curtain is enough to spook it and it takes off.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

They're really quite shy and wary. The one time I managed to get a close view of one on the pond by the allotments, a car went up the lane a moment later, and it was straight off. Most birds ignore cars going by, especially when there are trees between them and the road.

I am trying to make life as difficult as possible for the herons in my garden. No more straight wading in the ponds for them if I can help it!
