Title: Squash id.
Post by: Palustris on October 13, 2006, 15:40:48
Anyone any ideas as to which one this is? It does not match the description of any of the ones we sowed this year.

Hi Palustris
Are you sure it's a squash? It looks just like an heritage French melon I saw in the Real Seed catalogue: Prescot Fond Blanc.

I'm too much of a digi-ignoramus to add the link, but you'll find it under "melons" (obviously  ::))

This isn't smelly vision but that should give away any melon tendencies...
It could be a small/pale warted hubbard, but looks more like a triamble but they are distinctly three lobed / triangular from above...
???
Could of course be an accidental cross even seed companies get it wrong sometimes!
;D

Could be, if you sent us seeds of it Supersprout. It certainly came from te area where we planted the seeds you sent, but that name was not on any of your packets!
Thanks folks!

Looks like one of these, I don't know what it is but it came from a packet of mixed Italian squashes bought from Seeds of Italy

Think that confirms the thesis - last year when i had one of those mixed seeds of italy packs it named the varieties - but mixed up all the seeds - and marina di chioggia was on the list. Sorted.  ;D

I don't think so, this is Marina di Chioggia from the same packet, much more warted and a darker colour

Its the same colour as a Crown Prince squash, but yours is has more defined ridges.

The squash shown by Merry Tiller is more like a Crown Prince.

Exactly!
One day I'd love to bake loads of different kinds of squash and host a 'blind' squash tasting :P ::)

I think I might have mentioned this before but there is a beautiful book, aptly named "The Squash" - history, folklore and ancient and modern recipes, published by Konemann

the rx are great and the pictures just as lovely lots of pictures of this debated squash in there and although no names would surely be one of the italian suggestions (on reflection)  :)
