Title: More companion flowers
Post by: Biscombe on October 08, 2006, 09:38:50
HI all! I only grow veg, but this year I grew marigolds, calendulas sunflowers and herbs as companions for my veg. I've heard crysanthumums and paoched egg plants are also good companions, so I'll try them next year. Do you know of any more good, attractive companion flowers that I can try?

all the herbs; ipomoea is supposed to be good for melons and sweetcorn; tansy is a real aphid deterrant in as much as it diverts them to the tansy; any plant that attracts bees and other pollinators

I have a list of companion planting ideas http://www.acountrygarden.co.uk/files/companion.xls (http://www.acountrygarden.co.uk/files/companion.xls)

Also good are sunflowers, chamomile, rudbeckia, dahlia and all those already listed. :)

french marigolds, planted with toms, keeps greenfly etc away, also, let a coriander plant go to seed, the flowers bring hover flies in to poly or greenhouse, and fenel, also you can use the seeds for coking, yummy

Searching the web, I've found completely opposing opinions on using Dill to protect carrots. Some sites say it works, others that it's a really bad idea!

Has anyone tried it?

My nasturtium are helping keep the weeds down around my gooseberry bushes. I'm going to plant more next year they really bring the bees in and supress the weeds as well.
