Title: Ikea jar question
Post by: hairyhippy on September 29, 2006, 18:39:29
Off to try my hand at some green tomato chutney at the weekend using the above mentioned jars.

The recipe I have suggests that the jars should go into the oven prior to filling.

My questions are:

Which parts of the jar can go in, I presume that the rubber washer can't, but what about the lid and metal hinge?

How do I sterilise the rubber washer?

I have some wax discs and associated bits, are they still appropriate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Or conversely, you could just ell me how you use the Ikea jars. ;D

If I had Ikea jars, I'd do something like:

Wash and dry off/sterilise in lowest oven, minus the gromit
Put gromits in a basin, and pour boiling water over them
Fill jars with boiling hot chutney one at a time
Put on rubber gromit (using gloves :P) and clamp shut

with normal jam jars I'd cover with a waxed disk, then let cool completely and put on lid

:)

I took off the washer and put the rest in the oven at a low temperature  (100ishC?) (washed them first). Sometimes I just wash them in the dishwasher and don't bother with the oven bit. The washers I just put in some v hot water. Seems to have done the trick. All I know about washers is you're not supposed to reuse them but replace every time, however I do reuse them provided they make a good seal.
