I have three Hostas in pots. I would like to put them into the ground, but am concerned about slugs and snails eating them away.
At the moment, I have vaseline round the rims of the pots - and that stops them.
I was wondering if I put boards round the plants - in the soil, and put vaseline on those, would that stop the slugs and snails . . . . . or . . . can they burrow into the soil?
I can't see snails being able to do that - but don't know about slugs.
???
I think it would work - the burrowing slugs are usually the wee black ones who don't do Hostas??
I have found a combination of that grit stuff, beer traps and Nematodes quite effective... but can take a year or two to bash the wee beasties down!
;D
Thanks both.
I used to have a few Hostas in the garden previously, but they no sooner got leaves on, than they were eaten away.
I think I will take my chances, and try the wood idea.
Or get my hubby to start drinking beer.
;)
They really do need transplanting.
Cheapest beer possible... 2L Polypins @ 3% ABV as they put a lot of caramel and other flavourings in it ... they like the smell!
I refuse to put beer out for slugs, if they want some they can come indoors and ask for it like everyone else >:( ;) ;D
;D ;D ;D
