Title: why~?
Post by: cambourne7 on September 19, 2006, 13:52:49
Hi

I was looking at my vegi seeds the other day and watching a program on famine as you do.

And i could not get the idea out of my head as to why we cant send our unwanted veg seeds to Africa or a simular country to help them out.

Anyone know why?

They probably wouldn't suit the climate. It's a dreadful combination of factors causing the problem, and lack of seed isn't really one of them. The wrong seed is; they introduced new varieties of rice 20 or 30 years ago, which were supposed to enable the farmers to grow more food, but they needed artificial fertilisers, which the traditional vareties didn't. So the poorer farmers, who couldn't afford them, went under. Then a lot of the new ones succumbed to diseases that the traditional ones were resistant to. By the time people cottoned on, a lot of the original varieties had disappeared.

I think there is a sending seed thing somewhere, can't remember where though.
