Title: Freezing sweetcorn
Post by: Bun on September 16, 2006, 16:38:20
I've just harvested 6 cobs for the first time & I need to freeze them. Do I strip them first, or leave them intact & just bung them in?  ???

Both methods work fine, think what you want to do with them when you take them out ...

I don't know what I'll be doing with them. I've never eaten/growm sweetcorn before.  ???
What do you suggest?  :)

Depends on what freezer space you have. I'm freezing my sweetcorn today. Here's a link, complete with photos: http://www.pickyourown.org/freezingcorn.htm

Just stumbled upon that site earlier today!

I find shucking easier if you first cut through the cob across its base - just above the stem.

All done.
They've been boiled, chilled wrapped & are now in the freezer. Thanks for the link.  :)

Next time - as for anything - I think - is to chill things in the fridge before freezing??

And always check your freezer temperature before you put things in.

And don't exceed the recommended amount per cuft of freezer.

Our fridge is always too darned full to chill down stuff queueing for the freezer, so I have to store everything from ambient temperatures. However, I always load the freezer progressively, so there is never a large bulk going in all at once.

That reminds me, I have a bottle of cider chilling in there at the moment ...  :D
