Title: ID please
Post by: sweet-pea on September 15, 2006, 11:08:00
I was visiting Wollerton Old Hall gardens last weekend and spotted this plant without a label. I'd love to know what it is...I know I should have asked when I was there!

Does anyone recognise it?

Looks like Astrantia to me Sweetpea  :)

Certainly is.  I gave up on them because of the smell.

Woolerton Old Hall is my favourite garden, well worth a visit of you are in the area - check opening times, but the strawberry meringue in the tea room was lovely  :D

Thanks Mimi and Froglets.  I hadn't noticed a smell, maybe I should have got a little closer!

I agree, the gardens are beautiful and very compact.  I loved the 'hot' garden full of reds oranges and yellows.  I heard it recommended by Chris Beardshaw on Gardeners question time so thought it worth a visit.  I think it's only open Fridays and Sundays.

We like the gardens there too, but find them a little claustrophobic, with all those tall hedges. Oddest thing which struck us, was that none of the garden is visible from the downstairs windows of the house itself! It was obviously created for the visitors not the residents.
Agree about the id.
Oh and did you notice that Claire Austin of Irises and Paenies fame has moved to Shawbury, just down the road towards Shrewbury from Wollerton?
