Title: Getting corn off the cob
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on September 15, 2006, 09:32:47
What's the best way to detach corn from the cob in order to freeze it? I've got some which isn't worth eating on the cob, but would still be good cooked into something.

I hope this thread does yield a best way !!! I have salvaged my corn by cutting it off  with a knife. Not a best method perhaps, and it does deposit kernels ALL over the worksurface, but at least it does get them off the cob ...

Just done this

Place on end and dig in scrape downwards with a sharp knife

Careful with the fingers as the corn has a habbit of shooting off at right angles

After reading Curry's remark I would do it inside a bag to prevent kernal loss!

I cut the end square first, so it is flat on the worksurface. My knives are very sharp, and slipping can be disastrous ...

Inside the bag sounds like a brilliant suggestion Glow !!! If I have any more cobs to harvest, I will try that ...

Do you take the kernals off before cooking or do you have to cook the cob first?

I freeze them raw ...

Tim, so the end is cut, put in a bag, then on a cloth, then on a chopping board ...

Mind you, I don't find slipping a problem with a polypropylene chopping board ...
