Title: Early Bramleys
Post by: Kepouros on September 14, 2006, 17:58:03
Is this general, or is only in my garden?  I don`t normally consider picking the Bramleys until the end of September or early October and my grandchildren usually finish the job off at half term, but this year they started dropping at the very beginning of this month, and I had to pick the remainder a week ago before they all fell off.  All were completely ready and came off the tree at the slightest touch.

However, I must say that in the 40 years I`ve had the tree I`ve never before had a crop like it - either for quantity or for size of apples.

It's a brilliant year for ours, but the only windfalls, so far, have had the moth!

All my apples have done really well. They're all small trees, a few years old; we've almost finished the Egremont Russet, which I find need to keep for a week or two after they fall to get really sweet, and we're about to start on the Charles Ross, which dropped several apples when I shook it this afternoon

I have had so many high winds recently I can hardly move for fallen apples.. I'm going to have to do some serious tidying this weekend!

Agree with you Kepouros, it's been a really good year for apples - have just picked my Bramleys too, and all the crab apples are already dropping.

And I notice this afternoon that the Laxtons Superb, which we don`t normally touch until October, are also starting to drop - going to be another busy morning on the ladder tomorrow.
