Title: It was such a lovely Birch............
Post by: tim on September 13, 2006, 17:48:25
.........twin-stemmed, brought from Cumbria as a seedling 30 years ago. Lucky the neighbours are No2 Daughter & hers. Don't have to block them out!

Oh, well - winter logs will save a few pence. And with the price of oil - have you checked recently - at 39.78ppl...............It's only 2 years since it was 20ppl!!

Logs really need to be seasoned for 12months or more before being burn due to the sap mucking up the chimney, increasing soot deposits and generally making themselves a nuisance.  You can buy a powder called Witch Doctor that you sprinkle on every fire you light/use the new logs on to help fight against this.  A good old-fashioned iron-mongers should stock some.

Alternatively, if you can stash them somewhere till next year they'll be perfect!

By which time fuel and power will probably be even more expensive.

Yup. If and when we manage to move to a house I want solar panels, wind turbines and anything else to help with the bills.  Sooner or later this country will collapse  under the sheer cost of living and no-one being able to earn enough to pay the bills.

What about the retired? My mother's the only person I know of who can't afford to downsize.  She's got a small cottage in the middle of nowhere and wants to move closer to city-based family (support network, services, activity etc) and all she can afford is a flat in a good part of town (but then there's the associated charges to pay for each year which means she'll have to start work again and the employment opportunities aren't exactly abundant for some one in "that" decade) or move to a really rough area of town.

If the birch was dead it won't need the full year to season for burning, it's a pretty dry wood.  Flowering cherry on the other hand takes years, blunts axes and two years later is still depositing toffee on the inside of the glass.  we learned our lesson there & are now on beech windfalls and removed pine hedging ( I look at Leylandii with greed!)

I certainly wouldn't want to be buying into the housing bubble right now. I think the crunch is coming sooner rather than later; right now we're running on over-optimism.
