I just thought I'll mention that the jars from IKEA (in our local shop labeled "for jam"), which have a lid attached to them, are not air tight and can't be used for storing outside of the fridge. Try to pour a bit of water in it, lock the lid and turn upsidedown. Licking, isn't it? Disappointing.
We just recycle old jam jars... those cook in sauce jars work well, but need sending through several times to get rid of the taint..

Good to know Natasha, especially as I have run out and had to start asking neighbours to hang on to theirs for me....Ikea was on my shopping list.
My nana uses glasses from the supermarket - she doesnt liek to use jars as you can never get the lids properly clean.
I can ???

If you want lots and are buying them try here (http://www.ascott.biz/cat121_1.htm). Annoyingly it doesn't give quantities for all of them but it's the cheapest place I've found so far and the delivery is pretty quick. ;)
ooo, good prices for lots of jars. Think I should get the credit card out! Thanks for that James
Not had chance to compare prices yet, but I was looking at this site the other day for jars. waresofknutsford.co.uk
If it's standard size jars you want, in large quantities, then it's worth looking at beekeepers' supply firms. I've only had a quick look, but you can get them cheaper here http://www.beekeeping.co.uk/catalogue/NBS%20Catalogue%20PG10.pdf .
I was looking at these ones in Ikea and they reminded me of the ones we bought in France that have replaceable rubber seals and really good for chutney and pickled beet - they appear to have rubber seals. Think Lakeland also do something similar but dunno how much.

And another beekeepers' supplier (slightly cheaper than National Bee Supplies I think for basic and hex jars, though NBS does some gorgeous globe-shaped jars and other specials)

Yes, this is the type I was talking about. May be the rubber band isn't working properly, in fact it seems to be made of plastic, but I've got 4 of them and none of them is air tight, shame.
Ikea has them listed for preservation if this is wrong we should all complain!
I complained, but I didn't keep a receipt, so I can't get my money back. They also say that I'm the only one complaining. :-[
My Ikea ones are absolutely fine ???
Must be me than.
???
Mine have mostly been fine - but this thread sent me back to check again on ones I'd already used. Have just found 2 jars of passata unsealed that I'm sure I checked before and were OK!!! Fortunately the contents are still fine, so I've decanted them to freezer containers. Just as well I'm off on my hols this week so have got room. Thinks: Could have come back to some very funny smells from my store cupboard!! ::) Thanks Natasha. Will definitely be investing in some passata jars and more ordinary jard next year - and thanks for the links to the bees sites, they are excellent.
I use all kinds of recycled jars like jam jar, mayonnaise jar, etc. I sometimes use pickle jars and in that case the jars and lids need to be soaked in warm soapy water for a while to remove the smell of onion!
Used the last recycled jars last night on Peach & Pear jam. Looks like I will have to buy some for the first time, as still got pickled shallots, piccalilli, Christmas mincemeat to do yet.
Your not the only one, I found the same problem, only after I went to shake my blackberry brandy though and it leaked out. At the moment I have to leavve it in there as I don't have any jars of any kind that I could put it in.
I had a look at the Ikea jars last week, but wasn't sure, so left it.
Plumped for some 2lb jars from Ascott (thank you, James); so, when they arrive, the green tomato pickle production line will roll into action (thank you valmarg for the recipe).
I am picking some some jars i got from freecycle tomorrow and i am hoping i might get some tomatos before the bad weather settles. Got some plants that have started to flower so tomatoe chutney here i come!
And my courgettes are comming on so i might make something with these other then courgette fritters....
We used to make jam a lot in New Zealand where it's easy to obtain jars for jam and preserves. However for Jam we always used a cellophane seal which you put on when the jam and jar was still hot.and secured with a rubber band. When the seal dipped inwards in the centre it had created a vaccum in the jar if it didn't do this you put it in the fridge and ate it quickly. I have seen cellophane seals for Jam in my local hardware store (and jars) but you can use any jar this as way you don't need a lid.
