I dont greow this plant but do like it a lot and have the chance to propagate one for my garden. However I dont knwo the best wat to propagate it as I gather softwood/semiripe cutigns dont work for this plant. I was wondering about hardwood cuttings, since they are deciduous, and do make strong woody growth.
can anyone help me please?
PS: I'd buy one but they are expensive and Im too much of a cheapskate to fork out for one!
I've no experience of propagating from cuttings, but my second smoke bush came from the first by layering. It had naturally layered & I husbanded it for a good season before detaching it from the parent plant, so perhaps this isn't an option for you? Believe you can also grow from seed but again it's a long job. Sorry I can't be more help.
I've tried to propagate it but haven't succeeded, thought this post would tell me how, think I'll try layering it. :(
I cant try layering unfortunately. I was offered the chance to propagate from a cotinus, But I dont think the owner will stretch to letting ne layer it. I think they were thinking I could take cuttings from some prunings.
Richard, how expensive is "expensive"? I bought my first for £1.99 from either the Co-Op, Aldi or Woolworths about 5yrs ago.....worth keeping an eye out?

Maybe. but as I said i am a bit of a cheapskate. Perhaps i am being a bit TOO much of a cheapskate! I will have a look out in woolies (dont have either of the others near me). As a rule i dont like the plants they sell or the method they sell them, although i did get a set of 'bagged' shrubs from them a few years ago and with some TLC they nearly all turned into good plants (one turned out to be something different and nicer than it was supposed to be). Recently though when i looked they all looked like dead twigs I wouldnt pay 10p for!
