Title: Alishka - more black buckets !
Post by: mc55 on September 05, 2006, 22:16:16
Alishka - couldn't resist sharing this quote that I've just come across this in another group:

"I popped into Morrisons yesterday and now they are selling the same buckets at 20 for 99p. Bargain! "

get yourself down there ASAP !     ;D ;D ;D

I cannot believe that this wind-up about black buckets has now gone global :o The last time you lot tricked me into an expensive drive to Morrisons at a time of rising petrol prices they weren't even using them. No way am I falling for this a second time ;D

NOPE! black buckets are an urban myth IMHO :P

They do exist...I saw some in the Morrisons by the roundabout near Cowgate in Newcastle just last Thursday. They were hiding under a table. I forgot to rescue any tho.

Hi all,
Regarding the black buckets, Asda give away the ones that their flowers are delivered in, I got about 50 free!  You may have to give a donation to charity etc., but what a bargain!

hee hee hee ......... i've now got about 40 in my shed.  don't worry Lish, i've some saved for you.   ;D

I bought loads from Morrisons in the spring, I didn't realise that they were in fact flower buckets and that they had no drainage holes.  I had to drill each of them - at least 50 -  & several of them split cos they are very thin plastic.  Brilliant bargain though & a really good size.  I have grown all my toms in them & lots of other things.

I've pretty near gassed myself on a few occasions with a hot skewer in the kitchen making the holes lmao.

i've got a few dotted round the garden for various prunings !  dead handy.

can never have too many buckets ....... eh Lish ?

:P

aww, feeling bad now - if the October meeting is still on, maybe we should all raid our local morrisons so that Lishka can join the Black Bucket Club  :D :D ...

Sunday morning - after my sortie to Wilkinson's for their End-of-Season bargains, I'm going on to my local Morries and DEMAND MY RIGHTS ;D but I've still got this sneaky feeling that they don't actually exist.. :-\

Lish. You can even have one of mine. Lovingly transported in back of car from Isle of White. Drain holes already in. (I always drill a pilot hole first then use a bigger drill bit  Don't split the plastic then)
KP You are joking about the hot skewer aren't you ???

If KP's joking, I'm not. That's the way I do mine, always have. 8)

With a pointed knife. Shove it in and keep twisting it round till you have a hole the size you want.

nothing like a good lungful of molten plastic to clear the sinuses !

(and i think the plastic is so thin it would crack doing it "dry".)

Mrs KP. Read my post for suggestion. Don't fancy gassing myself with your method... I am too young to die ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Lish definitely won't need the odd one from me then, at least she won't think it is a windup any more ;)

i did try the drilling technique but it made so much racket that i was scared i'd wake the whole street. lol

i now only do one at a time, when needed, and have full ventilation and dedicated skewer (kebabs just wouldn't taste the same).   ;D

KP, you gave me the name of the pointed tool I keep for it - bradawl or something similar? I actually make patterns round my tubs - honest! The other day, tho, I was looking for my tomato slicing knife. Couldn't find it anywhere. Then remembered that the last time I'd used it (hot) was to cut round the black buckets (49p each from Wilkos, when I set up my ring culture Pretty Maids. Funny how most of my kitchen stuff ends up on the outhouse ::)

it must be cos i spent ages looking for them....i asked the woman stocking shelves and she looked at me like i just snatched her first born.

i spent ages looking for them....i then had to leave because i hit my toe in the shelf corner and it was bleeding and then they put a plaster on it and made me sit down.

in the doncaster branch they keep them near the marked down fruit and veg, but they are hit and miss, sometimes don't have any in for months.

roflmao @ wahaj !!

my very nice senior type of assistant person (he wore black trousers and a white shirt as opposed to a uniform - must be management  :P) who taped my first set of buckets up for me said i could always ask for them if i didn't see them, they had them "out the back".

but when i grabbed the 40 (yes FORTY) they were under a special offer table right by the incoming turnstiles.

still gutted i only got 8 for 99p though.   :P

wonder if they are the same size ?  The ones in Morrisons are 9 1/2 inches wide at top and 11 inches deep.

They will be great for toms ;)

Waitrose have got some beauties in at the mo - twice as deep as the normal ones. :o But they won't let me have any! I keep loitering round the flower display and asking different staff members but they are standing firm dammit.

I WILL get my mits on them somehow.

OK Lish. I will own up, I got 10 last week from my co-op but THEY COST me 10p each ( I can hear you laughing) I think they put money in their tea tin or something. Cos the assistant asked another if they ring it up but she said ....No it just goes in the tin.
Still a bargain and I don't begrudge the staff a cup of tea on me ;D

Swill out with some hot water first to heat up and soften the plastic, then use a Stanley knife or similar to cut holes, and remember - they don't have to be round!

Last year I heated up a tomato slicing knife, made a hole, then sliced round. Like cutting butter. 8) The discs I was left with a) got more holes put in them for wigwam supports and b) got fixed onto the horizontal canes of the runnerbeans structures.......an I've only just started on New Uses for Black Bucket Bottoms.....any more ideas please?
