I have long, thick cardboard tube which is approx 6 - 7cm in diameter.  I was wondering whether to cut it up and use it to grow carrots in next year.  Is this a good or daft idea?

I thought that I could cut the tube into 20cm lengths, fill with compost and start the carrots off inside, and then plant in the ground (including the tube) once they are bigger/stronger.

I have always been put off growing carrots because of pests - what it the best way for disease/pest free carrots?

ROB, First off these vegies have been grown in a polly tunnell to put on a show bench.
People have told me they are going to do what you would like to try, i have never seen it work. The tap root devolopes faster than the foliage so when you transplant them you must have the tap root intact and straight otherwise they just fork.

A better view
