Title: Mystery tomato ID please!
Post by: supersprout on September 02, 2006, 11:57:00
Earlier this year I bought 24 heritage tomato plants from the Whispering Trees nursery in Downham Market for a fiver ;D They had no labels, so we don't know the varieties.

This one is pure gold! Soft and sweet, full of flavour but not too acid. I'd like to grow them next year but likely to be too greedy to save any seed :-[

Could anyone tell me the variety please?

I would offer yellow pear or yellow perfection - take it that is the final ripe colour - I think all the yellow toms tend to be low acid, look very nice  :)

Thank you calendula, yes it's the final ripe colour - a pale lemony rather than orange/gold yellow :)
Just been scouring Tomatofest.com's gallery - the nearest was 'cream sausage' ???

Def not yellow pear... I've grown them and they swell away from the stalk..
I'll just have a quick look in my sad man's tomato book..
They could be small examples of Banana Legs which has that distinctive teat at the end...
or lemon Plum but they tend to be fatter... or Jaune des Andes/Poivron Jaune but that tend to be much squarer like a blocky pepper..
Or one I've not got a pic of... def save some and e-mail a photo to Grow Organic at Coventry to see if they recognise it...
???

Looks like orange banana to me too, they have a wonderful flavour and make fantastic sauces.

I would have a fridge full*, if my daughter didn't just eat them all.

*well not quite, I don't refridgerate toms.

well if you decide to grow cream sausage, they're nice! Have grown them for a couple of years and yes, they're not too acidic, so if you want to bottle them you have to add citric acid. Just took this pic of a plateful I've currently got, so you can compare colour. These ones are very ripe so it's about as dark as they get!

moonbells, I can't see the pic - and want to very badly! :P
hoping to take delivery of cream banana seed shortly (thank you barkingdog)
just to be sure, will grow cream banana, orange banana, and cream sausage next year - that should cover all the bases ;)

amphib, I don't fridge me toms either - they are all eaten or squidged a few hours after picking ::)

Here's another pic from last year this time: the proceeds of half a dozen plants each of CS and Sungella: you can see the distinct difference in colour between the orange and yellow. Have given you the direct link again as well as the embeddeds, in case you can't see it!

nicky's nursery sells them, heritage seed, but they describe them as quite sharp (unusual for a lemon coloured tomato) so probably not the same one
