Title: MY PRIDE AN JOY
Post by: angle shades on September 02, 2006, 11:50:16
was stolen yesterday out of my coldframe >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(.

I had two melons, 1 large and one not so large, both not ripe yet, the largest one was taken, I brought the other one home ,along with every thing else I could carry in case the b*****d struck again.

I'm going to plot this pm when I pluck up courage to see if everything is OK.

I thought I would share my shock with everyone on here as you will all know how I feel :( :( :( :(/ thanks for listening/ shades x

that's a really crappy thing to do on so many levels!

i mean arrrg! people put so much time and effort into the lotties and if this is what comes out of it then what's the point?

it's never ever even crossed my mind of touching someone else's lottie. i don't even look at them to see how theirs are doing!

and if it's kids then they really need to find better things to do with their time.

i feel for ya. it's so frustrating.

Thank you for your kind comments, its made me feel better for sharing :)

I also think( it hurts me to even say this) someone on my site took it,as the coldframe(homemade from double glazed windows, but unscrewed in last months hot weather for lots of ventilation) windows where put back carefully and the other melon was left for me.

Only a handful of people knew I was growing them, and my coldframe cannot be seen from lottie road, it can only be seen from my neighbours plot.

I've been to plot this pm everything seems OK,but my greenhouse door was shut and I always leave it open ::) so someone is being extra careful. Thanks for all your support once again/shades  :-*

Next job, set a trap if you think they are still visiting. I don't know how or what but I'm sure you could come up with something.

I know how you feel, we keep getting yellow courgettes nicked. Even though we are giving them away by the armful its annoying to have them taken.  :-\

thanks for making me laugh out loud ;D ;D  Emaggie and Rosebud.

I love the phrase' Diarrhoea to the dastardly demons', more super hero's should say it!

It is awful having stuff nicked when everyone is giving produce away,

We have our open day tomorrow and I'm just dreading someone helping themselves... we'll be selling stuff for funds at ridiculously low prices.. but some people have no compunction. It must be even more galling to think it is a fellow allotmenteer..

It is just the lowest of the low thing to do to another lottie neighbour. How can people sink to that when they surely know the effort involved in growing and making stuff. You have my sympathy angle shades and I do hope your things are safe tomorrow saddad!  >:( busy_lizzie

It doesn't seem to be children, they surely wouldn't have left things so tidy. I can imagine how you feel, I have just one melon which I am willing to get ripe, would be really angry if that was stolen.(The neighbour who I gave a couple of plants to because I didn't have room has got several melons!!)) Really sorry for you..Hope no repeats of the rotten trick., Good luck.
Lorna.

It's not my stuff I'm most worried about Busy-Lizzie it is other plotholders, as committee man and one of the driving forces behind NGS open days I'll get a lot of flak...

i once got to the point of shopping around for a spy camera to put in my shed. If it becomes persistent, it's worth considering.

Angle Shades, it must have been devastating to find that the fruit you had been nurturing soooo carefully had been nicked.

It's a stange world we are living in at the moment.

Gads angle shades, sorry to hear it! I got a pumpkin nicked by kids earlier in the season and I was ready to lurk around in the lottie with the cricket bat. Even worse that it's someone who knows what they're doing.  >:( Good luck with the other one, hope the runs wishes come true!

Unbl**dybelievable.

So angry for you Shades !

I'd go formal!  Say you need site security improved.  If you've got a friendly plod person, get him/her down in uniform to make lots of notes and take pictures of the scene of the crime.

No one on the plot is to know whether you're seriously reporting it or not or what might happen as a result of it.

this is outrageous.

I know just how you feel. I was gutted when someone stole my beetroot that were just ready to pick after thinning out. It's awful to think that perhaps another plot holder had pinched them but it makes you wonder when they seem to know what to take. we have 2 allotment sites on different sides of the road on our estate and someone on there had tehir shed broken into and all they took were knives. The same happened to us a few weeks ago so we informed the police. Turns out they were 10 year olds. It's very worrying.

Plods won't come to sites for theft of a melon MRSKP ;)When an arsonist burnt down 12 sheds on our site(mine included) I was given a crime number, but they were 'to busy' to do anything else and advised me to take photos ::)

To cut a very long story short ,after the chap finished setting fires to sheds, bins etc ,he moved on to tyre slashing on cars in streets and racial hatred. The last episode woke the police up, he was arrested and a diary found with dates with when he set fires!! Suddenly the police wouldn't leave me alone and TWO YEARS later wanted statements and photos.Last week ,THREE YEARS later he pleaded guilty,my evidence having put him away. I was thanked and asked if I wanted to join the police force ::) You couldn't make this up........./shades x

This is so dis-spiriting. Too date I've found my fellow plotters generous in sharing advice, crops and cuttings.

I've an inherited plum tree on my site and was warned to pick early 'cos my crop might 'fly'. My reaction was to invite neighbours to  pick  a few but leave some for me (my older plot neighbour schooled me in this - "help yourself to the rhubarb - there's more than we can eat"). To date it seems to be working the plums but when someone nicks your stuff it's not just personal grief, it reduces levels of trust across a whole site.

Shame on your pilferer and sympathy to you.

roflmao ........ only in the UK eh ?

Still, it wouldn't hurt to "borrow" a man in uniform, just to take a walk around the site with you (you must know one, we all do) lol.  The more we pressurise this bunch into protecting us like they're paid to do, the more notice they might take.

and well done you !!!

;D

Our site has no security, and children and dog walkers use it in spite of a blurred notice at the entrance saying access to plot holders only and No Dogs. I've had children asking me for string to make bows and arrows with and I've given them some if only to keep on the right side of them. I was leaving the site recently when I looked back and saw a pair of dog walkers handling my yellow courgettes and Ferline tomatoes. Maybe just admiring them, but I didn't like it, and hurried back. Only chatted pleasantly to them, but made it clear it was my plot and not a public service.

If we did try to make the council put up a lockable gate, there are plenty of places in the hedges and trees around the site that people could get in through (and do). I had a long length of new rope stolen recently. It makes me think twice about growing the more desirable fruit and veg on that site, as fortunately I have another where I keep asparagus and raspberries and so on.
