Hi all,
Some of you may know me as one of the Admins on the new Gardenworld Board, (Oh, and no I'm not defecting!) but as I've promised not to promote that over here, that's enough of that. I am also a member of the BBC boards, but their time restrictions and inter-board isolationism makes it a very user-unfriendly place to be. :(
On A4A I am just an ordinary member, and doubtless after this little fanfare introduction I will just slip away and keep my head down. Time is a little short at the moment but I hope to be able to post and join in when I can. I might even learn something!
Also, thanks very much to Dan for allowing me to join. ;D

Welcome Spruance. I am sure you will enjoy A4A . Hope to hear more from you.
Come right in, put your feet up, and welcome to the clan (Dan's Clan, that is).

Hi, thankyou to you both for the welcome. ;D
BTW it's a long way off for me yet, but what
is a Yabb, in the context of Yabb God? ???
Spruance
For you this may be 'Young Able Bodied Bloke'? If so, where have you been all my life :P Got things to dig, things to move, things to fix.....an on an on.. ::)
Welcome to A4A, btw.

Hi Lishka,
Thanks for the welcome.
"Young Able Bodied Bloke" eh? Yes, I like the sound of that. It's probably about 60% accurate in my case as I'm a healthy 47 year old, and I am a bloke! Still, you're as young as you feel, or so 'they' say! ;D
Spruance
OMG Lish is at it again!!!! The yabb comes with so many posts (can't remember how many) the number of posts used to be shown under your name but Dan discarded that. Which as members said it was a good idea doesn't matter how many posts you make. It was still visible under you profile details but that seems to have gone to pot.
In other words we are are equal.
Regards Lorna.
Yes, I've wondered about that YaBB God myself. ??? There should be a thread about that. Welcome Spruance!

Hi Squashfan,
Thanks for the welcome.
Now what have I started? :o
I've been lurking for quite a while, and was just curious. Perhaps least said the better. :)
I'd noticed there was no postings tally on A4A. We still have them at the moment, together with a topical variation on the member tiers. It's all just a bit of fun though isn't it. I hope nobody takes it too seriously.

To pick up on some points here...in general on forums where no. of posts are visible, it can be a bit daunting for newbies who think they'll always be outside an established group... clique even? That was the point made here by many and, as Dan runs a v. democratic forum here, he took this on board & the post count disappeared. Certainly recently, when our post-count suddenly reappeared some peeps, including our Sage, Tim, much loved and a Font of knowledge, with an impressive post-count himself, were quick to ask for the count to be 'disappeared'....and Dan, bless him! did it. Personal feeling is that, even with the quirkiness given by some boards, it still establishes a hierarchy....and Dan's NOT our Man for that....a first-time poster's words of advice stand always side by side in valued judgement with a person of many 1,000s post under the their belt. And so it should be. I feel that Dan's got it right here 8)
modified to add....I think Dan opened a POLL re: what members wanted, 1st time round & this no nos. count won out?
Hello Spruance. Interesting name!! ;D YABB means something, but I can't remember what....dumb blonde see, and yes, God is when you have posted, um, 500 or 1000 posts or something.....but who cares, we are all just one happy family here.
Yours Goddess ;)

Hi Alishka,
Yes, I quite agree.
Actually this sort of thing has caused problems on another (non-gardening) forum I'm a member of whereby in view of my 'rank' I was ridiculed for not knowing the answer to the question I was asking. As I pointed out at the time, being a member of two years standing didn't automatically mean that I knew everything. Of course, as you say, the opposite is often true. I have been posting on garden message boards for only three months in all. On the other hand, I have been actively gardening since I was 14 years old so... <counts on fingers, and toes....> over 33 years. I must have picked up some useful information in all that time so I am quite happy to share it. ;D

Hi Emma Jane,
Yes I know how the rankings work I was just curious about the title.
As for my username, I've actually just posted an explanation about that 'In another place', so here goes again...
Mine comes from a moment of exasperation just over 5 years ago, when I spent 20 minutes trying to pick a username that either hadn't been taken already or that didn't fall outside of the acceptable parameters.
In desperation I grabbed a book from the bookcase, riffled through the pages and picked the first name I clapped eyes on.
Unfortunately, the book was 'Ships of the U.S. Navy'. Hence I am Spruance, as in Spruance Class Destroyer! ::)
One advantage though is that it is, perhaps not surprisingly, fairly uncommon, and so I can usually rely on it elsewhere with little or no variation.
Of course it could have been worse.... On the next page was Amphibious Warfare Vessel! ;D
Spruance
Hi Spruance....I've joined your gardening forum and jolly good it is too. I tend to lurk around here alot though. Shed dweller I am.
Hello, and welcome, Spruance. I have just recently joined your forum too. YABB = Yet Another Bulletin Board?
Heldi, you can dwell in my shed any time you want ... ;D
I asked the Yabb question soon after I started posting regularly and got an answer that was Yet Another Bulletin Board... IE someone who spends too long on the comp. and not enough on the plot!!!!

T'would have been hell...we've already got Amphibian, so spect it would have come down to 'Ian' and 'Us'? And how can you be us ??? ::) (see, just the thought of it's turnin me eyes all roll-y)
Hi Spruance ! Welcome aboard matey !!! ;D
I see you've met Lish ? ;D
Welcome to the forum spruance, hope you enjoy it here, enjoying your posts already ;D
May I call you sprue? ::) ;)
and SS ! ;)
;D
Well, where do I start?
Thanks to Heidi & Curry. Pleased to see your enjoying the other forum. Thanks also to Curry for the YaBB explanation. Also saddad, supersprout and not forgetting Mrskp whom I know already.
What a friendly lot you all are ;D Especially after the little 'misunderstanding' last week.
I haven't really got much time at the moment as I'm supposed to be 'somewhere else', but I do intend to be as active a member of A4A as time allows.
Certain areas are familiar but others are markedly different, but I suppose I'll soon get used to it.
Anyway, I'll just have a wander around for now, and then I'll have to put my other hat on for a while.
