Title: Aubergines- too late now?
Post by: caroline7758 on August 29, 2006, 22:15:30
My aubergines, in the greenhouse, are only at the flowering stage, and the first flower on one plant has now shrivelled up & gone brown. Is there any chance of me getting any fruit now? If not, I'll get rid, as they are  taking up a lot of room!If they still have a chance, is it ok to "stop" the plants at the top, as they are nearly going through the roof.

I have loads of buds but just one flower.  I fear we're too late to harvest anything but I'm keeping them right til the last.  Note to self, sow earlier next year.

Hi Caroline,

this is my first year with Aubergine - think I sowed too late but have 1 3 inch fruit on each plant and some more flowers.

I took out all the side shoots to see if it would help fruit develop. I'm wondering what size fruit will grow to / when to pick them/ will they be useable ?

Like Mrs.kp will have to sow earlier next year ....

regards Gail

Better to pick when they are small and still shiny.  If you let them go bigger and the skin goes duller they become more bitter and you then have to do the scoring, sprinkling with salt on kitchen paper job.

You should have removed the top when they were 30cm in order to encourage them more sideshoots.
