A tip for the new to gardening. Do not pull your cabages cut them off leaving at least the bottom four leaves. Cut a cross across the stalk this will produce another four young cabbages. Also the base leaves act as ground cover.
I cut two to see if its worth doing, they are growing slowly.
I do it with the spring cabbage to get a second flush of greens while waiting for the mains, usually works well but can mess up your rotation..

I agree with you there, rotation must always be considered. My cabages always follow the potato crop so i can lime. My early Cabages always go in furthest away from the potato's these i cut and cross the next row is always my winter ones Tundra. My mid season ones nearest the spuds are pulled and the ground limed this leaves me ample room for my beet, lettuce spring onions etc
sounds great, but i don't understand how it could mess up rotation. how long till you get the second crop.
Because some late cabages may still be where you want to put you potato,s
