HI all,
Just planted loads of onion seeds in small polystirene seed trays! Is this ok?
How do you all plant your onion seeds?
Same as you I sow them in seed trays and when they are large enough to handle, transplant them out into the onion bed.
Do you do that with the overwintering variety too?
I'm trying a number of different ways biscombe - to date, have sown overwintering varieies six to a module, then planted out the whole clump 9" apart.

Will sow direct in short rows outdoors in the Spring, probably on home made seed tape, and also try the seed tray method. Am looking for the least faffy/most effective method too ::)

Yes (Mike B)
When do you put them in the ground?
OOOO I just put mine straight in the ground! And they are coming up! Planned on thinning out later and eating them as spring onions... hope that is right

where did you get those seed tray modules they are cool. ::)
Glad you think so ruffie, I do too! Have given away my rootrainers and most of my pots :o
Got them from OGC - http://www.organiccatalog.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2037
Not cheap :'( but cheaper if you buy them in 4's and I expect them to last as long as I do. They are great cos they fit on a windowsill, go in the dishwasher after use, pop out bootiful, and watering is a breeze ::)
Good hunting :)
SSx
PS I wish my seeds were that well-behaved OO, you got the green thumb :o ;)

When do you put them in the ground?
Seeds by mid-August, sets by the end of September - with a bit of flexibility, slightly earlier in the North, slightly later in the South :)
I have my packet of seeds, sow in trays now when do I plant out??
